GReddy SP2 ('95-'96) Installed on '99 Max *PICS*
Installed on Saturday. Thanks to I30tMikeD for the heads up that the '95-'96 SP2 muffler fits perfectly flush with the '97-'99 Max/I30 bumper. It is perfect, although I still need to adjust it laterally.
For all the people like me (i.e., non-ricers
) who DON'T want their big exhaust tip to stick out, the 95-96 SP2 is the ideal choice for a 97-99 Max. But I do have some issues with this setup that I'm going to have to fix.
Here are the facts about this setup:
1. The GReddy product development team must be a bunch of smart guys who smoke crack once in a while. The 95-96 SP2 B-pipe has an O2 bung hole and it really shouldn't.
95-96 Maximas: this bung hole is superfluous since 95-96 Maximas have the rear O2 in the cat. Furthermore, the 95-96 rear O2 sensor is too small to fit in this hole, so you'll have to just plug it. (Steve at SCO said that an oil pan drain plug from a '9x Honda Odyssey fits perfectly...)
97-99 Maximas: since we have the O2 sensor in the B-pipe, this is great. And in fact the bung is exactly the right size/thread for a 97-99 O2 sensor. Unfortunately, the O2 hole points down instead of up, so your O2 sensor will stick way down and possibly get damaged if it scrapes. (See photo below).
2. The main problem I have is the section of the B-pipe just in front of the right rear wheel is sitting extremely low. No, you can't just add a hanger there to pull it up. The pipe won't budge up or down since that would twist the whole exhaust all the way up to the engine and it's bolted on. Mine is probably 3" or so lower than the stock B-pipe (see photos). My suspicion is that either (A) GReddy was really tokin' the dope and didn't do a good job fitting the pipe to the car or (B) the rear flange on the cat of a 97-99 Max is angled slightly differently from that of a 95-96 Max, so as a result the fit isn't perfect here.
3. As I mentioned, the 95-96 SP2 muffler is a perfect fit for 97-99 Maxes. Sits flush and the diameter is a perfect match for the bumper cutout.
4. The 95-96 SP2 is aboue $15 cheaper than the 97-99 SP2.
5. It sounds GReat! Very deep and smooth idle. From inside the car with the windows up, it makes its presence known but quietly. On a scale 1-10 where 1 is stock and 10 is annoyingly loud, I'd call this a 4. But I have yet to hear it from outside while the car is being driven.
Re the B-pipe sitting too low, I can't really complain to GReddy since I technically didn't buy the correct application. But it's worth it to get the muffler look I wanted! I am just going to take it to an exhaust shop and see if they can put some adapter at the interface of the cat and the B-pipe that will rotate the pipe up so it's tucked closely as it should be, and I'm also going to have them weld in a new O2 bung on the top instead of the bottom, so the O2 is where it belongs. Hopefully it won't cost too much...although it is 100% stainless steel which is harder to work with.

My B-pipe hands down a bit as well, but no as much as yours. I never hit it on anything and you can only really see it if you crouch down so it is not really an issue for me.

Wow that is hanging REALLY low. I would've scraped/bent that to the tube if that was on my car. Then again, if i backed out straight or too fast with my Max at my old house, the front would still hit.
My OEM b-pipe actually sat lower because of the resonator than my new Budget b-pipe with magnaflow resonator.

Is it a common thing to have B-pipe hang a little low so its visible when standing away from the car? Or is it the way the installer does it? I wish mines could stay snug under and away from sight. It drives me crazy. I'm always scratching mines over speed bumps.

Nice.. i have a 96 and i got the 95-96 sp2 but it sticks out of the bumper about 1.5".. i dont mind cause it says greddy on the side.. 2 weeks ago i put the warpspeed y pipe, magnaflow highflow cat, and the sp2.. My car sounds "off the hook".. Signaficant gains !!! I combined it w/ my B&M short shifter and the car feels great.. Now i have to worry about the front left wheel bearing which is making noise now.. GOOD LOOKING MAX!!

just a stupid question, but are you sire you didnt but the b pipe on up side down, the first pipe is about 3-4 feet long right, well assuming that if it were up side down that would fix your low rear section, on my buddies apexi ws2 it was very hard to tell which way was right, im just curious so let me know

If anyone experienced with exhaust work has any ideas for how to tuck the B-pipe up where it's supposed to be, please let me know! I'm hoping it won't require having the B-pipe re-shaped, but if there's no other option I will do that.

Is there anyone with a 95-96 Max who knows if their rear cat flange is horizontal or not? If it was horizontal, that would explain why my fitment isn't perfect.

If we had the correct stuff to weld stainless I'd do that no prob.
I don't think the B looks too terribly low. I've told you this already but I'll post to hear what other think. I think the main reason it looks bad is because its so shinny. Throw some black on it and you will hardly notice it. Mine stuck down but not so much it dragged or banged. But when driving my buddies would allways ask me what that thing was hanging down.
If we had the correct stuff to weld stainless I'd do that no prob.

i have the 95-96 SP2 on my 99 and i must say that it looks better on my 99 than it does on the 95-96s due to the length of the tip. I wish mine was as shiney as yours though

I have the 95/96 Sp2 on my 96, and my b-pipe is just as low as that. My stock pipe was the same way too, but i think that was because the hangars were broken off. Where I drive there are crazy potholes but I dont think ive ever hit the b-pipe on anything, and I dont even mind that it sticks down so much. I bought a really crappy cat off e-bay without a hole for an 02 sensor, so I think the extra bung on the greddy might work for me because Im going to put the 02 sensor that would have gone into the cat into there. The only issue is how to seal it in because the 02 sensor is smaller then the hole in the greddy.
