Auto Tranny VB Mod

I hate the slow shifts of my auto. So I took a ride up to level 10 today to see what they could do about it. The guy told me it would cost about $1200 to do it. He said they have to be careful so the electronics don't go into limp mode if the computer thinks there is a problem. I think they are looking to rape me or there not interested in the job. I'm thinking of doing it myself. I've never messed with a trans before but I have had the timing cover off my car (fix an oil leak) and replaced the water pump. What should the parts cost for this. He told me the modified VB was about $800 for parts.

You can buy the valve body from Maximum Tuning and install it yourself. If you can take the timing cover off the car, you can install a valve body. It's just nuts and bolts and a plug or two. Be ready to get full of oil, it's a messy job, access to a lift will make it simple.

Why would you go through all that, and do it your self. When you can have a professional do it for you?

Save maybe aditional 100 or two. You deffinitly need acess to a lift for that job. So if you don't have a lift, Better off have somone do it for you.
Good luck Either way.

My buddy has a lift in garage. I will probably just get the parts and try it myself. It can't be any worse than that timing cover job (PIA). Is maximum tuning the best place to get the parts? I don't want to spend $1200 on a car with 175k on it to have it professionally done. But the car runs and drives like new and I've got so much time and money into it. So far I've fixed or replaced in the 6 months I've owned the car Struts,Water Pump, O2 Sensors, Knock Sensor, Several Oil leaks, gas tank, sunroof leak, CV joints, exhaust(Ypipe back). control arm bushings, LED mod in dash,2k2 17" wheels. The bottom line is I love the Max and don't mind working on it.

I'm definetly going to give Jeff a call

about this vb mod, it makes the tranny shift harder, quicker, and faster right?...so does this decrease the life of the transmission do to harder working parts?....also for people that have this mod, how much faster are you going?..anyone have before and after timeslips?...how much time does it take off the 1/4 mile....? thanks

i meant VB MOD***** yes it does make the transmission shift harder and faster. it actually increases the life of the transmission because it is not shifting smooth therefore not putting stress on the clutch packs in the transmission. i was going to go to the track yesterday but it got rained out but i will get my slips up asap. like i said in my original post i had .5 tenths taken off of my 1/4 time time.

I assume that the Max and the I30 vb are the same. Does anyone know if this is true?
I had this mod in my 01 max and would like to get it in my 01 I30.

I thought it was the drag radial mod that shaved .5 tenths off

This thread totally fukcing sucks.

Yes Max and I30 are the same VB.
DR = drop resistor mod, check the stickys.

If were easy to explain in one sentence we wouldn't refer you to the stickys.

.5 is a stretch, some guys have actually become slower.

Yes quicker/harder shifts, but the DR will retain the normal shifts when not wot, if you do indeed have it switched to a WOT switch please don't as me to explain anything I'm writing because I wont.

Look in the stickys.

If you're out of the NYC area, shippijg is about 13 dollars, send him 600, he gives you the modded one, you put it in or have a shop do it, send him your old one back, get 200 in your bank account for the core.

you tell em NmexMax. .5 is pretty hardcore unless you maybe added an ECU with extended limiter, or your previous VB was that bad.

And you don't mind the rough shifts at low speeds?

If you do not get a tranny cooler, the answer is "Yes."

It a little bit more agressive than the stage II and not as dramatic as the stage III ...

dr, once again, you're wrong .... Tranny cooler is just cheap insurance, the VB mod wont decrease life, but it is good to compliment the mod whether it be VB or DR, cooler is the icing on the cake. Doesn;t add any performance but as stated before, cheap insurance.

If you add a WOT switch, it will not give you hard shifts at low speeds. The switch will only drop the resistor at Wide Open Throttle. I do not like hard, fast shifts at low speeds. At high speeds they rock!

The DR shifts at WOT are awesome, the way they put you back into your seat. anything other than WOT sucks. I'd get the VB, but im thinking i want to go 5 speed. So we shall see

the vb mod is 350...how much is a little more that you could get the 5 spd for? a little more, and you could probably get the tranny. but what about the clutch, flywheel, and all the little accessories needed for the swap?

Jeff does I, II, II.5, III. Next time call and ask him or read a few of these threads, or www.maximumtuning.net

Cooler about 40 ish give or take depending on brand, read the stickys for further information.

ekohb I've already spend 300 and that was only on BARE minimal items.
