98 Maxima Battery & Brake light come on Intermittantly

Brake light and battery light come on for a few seconds. Is my alternator going. Seems to be affected by turning thing on and off. Its been a super wet weekend around here, could be dampness ????

Okay, I found this topic: OMG The battery and brake light came on at the same time

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ALT fuse has blown. It is located under the hood in the fuse box near the battery. In most cases this means your Alternator is dead/shorted out. Replace the fuse when you replace the alternator.

Is the Alternator dead or intermittant? Why does the thing flash is is on it way out? Can I just replace the fuse if blown or will it just blow again?

Remember, it blew for a reason. Your alt is most likly dead. Have it tested at Autozone for free.

What does this fuse look like or what is it labeled? I see no blown fuse. There are a few big boys in there I assume its one of those like 165 watts maybe?
Car shows 11.5 volts not running and head light on, while running shows 13.5 volts of course the idiot lights are out. So maybe aternator is working intermittantly?

If it was blown I would not see 13.5 volts at battery I would think, right?

its your alternator .. since you have a '98, you may be eligible for a free alternator replacement since there's an alternator recall for '97 & early '98 Max's

I bought my 98 used with 55,000 miles, had the alternator fail (bearing) at 61,000 and it was not covered by the used car warranty. I'll be pretty torqued if I find the used car guy ripped me when I could have had it done free. Is there a list of recalls someplace I can consult? Otherwise, I know you call the dealer and give them the VIN and they will tell you what you are eligible for.)

the recall covers '97/'98 Max's manufactured b/w 2/97 thru 2/98 .. mine was 1/98 so I had to replace mine, prob. be a good idea to check your driver doorsill for the manufacture date

This morning battery was dead as dead can be. The light came on yesterday for the first time intermitantly and nothing was left on all night. Why a dead I mean really dead battery today? I have the charger on it now.

Do you think a bad battery with a shorted cell could show same symptoms. Its not taking a charge and if I put my meter on it voltage drops quickly once charge is pulled off. Seems strange battery went completly dead over night.

I had my alternator & tranny replaced due to a recall on 98's back in 2002. But the alternator seems to be what's triggering the blown fuses. Is there a slow start? The alternator is trying to get juice and probably drained battery. Like someone said though, Autozone (or a R&S Strauss) will check it out for free. Check w/ your dealer as it should be covered under you warranty.

Only could get started by replacing battery. Alternator is putting out 20 volts and lights are on pemanantly. Will this 20 volts cook other stuff like the computer? I think it cooked my other battery. I'll call a dealer now.

Same thing happened to me. They both flashed maybe 4 times. Two days after having my UDP installed, it was pouring (rain) I think it had to do with my passenger side going through a puddle at 20mph, and my belts getting wet. It hasn't happened since then.

Nobody seems to know about the mystery fuse. Mine seems to be working fine too after installing re-built, wasn't to hard to do.

My lights were on intermitantly for one day. That night the battery went completely dead and alternator was putting out 20 volts once I got the car started again. Since I put in rebuilt alt and charged up battery all seems fine the last few days, no lights.
