140,000 Miles

I've had my car for almost 2 years now. Got it when it had 100,000, now I have it up to almot 140,000. I hav'nt had a tune up since, just normal oil changes, air filter and fuel injector replacements. I think it's time for a tune up. What type of tune up should be done at these many miles, and how much is a reasonable price for a tune up?

Oh Boy. I'm signing in for the ride.

Not knowing anything about the vechicle's past maintenance:
At 120k you should have done the following:

1. NGK plugs
2. Air Filter
3. Fuel Filter
4. Transmission drain/fill/flush (if auto)
5. Radiator drain/fill/flush
6. Replace accessory and power steering belts
7. Oil Change
8. Clean the throttle body

Those are the most important things (IMHO). So if you haven't done any of those recently (or since you bought the car, now is a good time as any). There are other items you may want to do as preventative maintenance, e.g. replace PCV valve, flush power steering fluid, clean battery posts.

A dealer will charge upwards of 600 dollars for all that work. I would recommend either learning how to do some of those things yourself or finding a competent independent mechanic to work on your car.

Enjoy the drive.

Cheers.

Clean the idle air control valve (IACV). Do a lot of the checks required: brakes, exhaust, steering, CV boots, suspension etc.

Is there a thorough list available for such maintenance - I bought my car not too long ago and now since spring is here, i wanna work on it a little myself, and have a ind. garage do the rest - i've gone through Motorvate site (even tried donating - didnt work) ... tried to pick up what i could.... But I would appreciate a site that had an exhaustive list of all the maint. work that one should perform on a newly acquired car - btw, i have 120k miles on my 97 GXE (5-spd).

Oh, have many converted rear drums to discs - how much lbr/$$$?

Thanks!

The Nissan website will tell you what maintenance is required on your car at the major service intervals... its in the Owners section on the website.

Since when did 4th Gens come with drum brakes in the rear ?

First of all you should get a Haynes manual and read the stickies. At 120K you should be performing the 60K service all over again, which includes replacing the plugs. You should check the plugs. I'm a firm believer that the NGK platinum plugs are good for more than 60K.

And secondly, 4th Gen Maximas (of which you own one) have disc brakes all the way around, not rear drums.

Focus thoroughly on all the fluids perhaps requiring replacement: Radiator coolant, flush power steering fluid, bleed brakes, transmission flush, transaxle fluid replacement (if a 5-speed), replace clutch fluid (if a 5-speed), change oil & filter.
