Do you need the OEM starter?

Hey, my starter it ALMOST toast. Anyways, I called the two local stealerships and they told me 399 CAN if I bring my old one in and get the "core" deal thing.
anyways, thats crazy expensive
is it possible to get a different starter?
perhaps, a third parties starter that might not cost as much?
I have a 99 max se that was built in Oct 98
thanks

I bought my starter at a local autostore and it has a lifetime warantee. they were about half the price of the dealerships. In my case thought my starters seem to go out evevery year I gotta change out my starter again, but that lifetime warantee is surely paying off, I'm sure an OEM wouldnt have such a short life, or you can regrease it if you have the time and patience, would be a whole lot cheaper.

Replaced mine with 1 from autozone a year ago. No problems yet, and it had lifetime warranty also. Around $100 i think.

look up an alternator and starter exchange place, you can problaby land a rebuilt one for $80, supposedly they rebuild the entire thing instead of the only worn part like those autozone ones are.

do you really need an entirely rebuilt one? i mean, if there is a lifetime warranty, your set, right?

I dont agree. When you return the OEM starter as a core, what do you think happens to them?

They get disassembled, checked, and reassembled again.

The parts are the same. And they are not mass produced so quality should be the same, if not better.

If the OEM starter was so good, it would never fail. Its a strong high torque electric motor. It's not rocket science.

Yes I know there dis assembled and worn out part replaced. Quality of the replacement parts is questionable, if the parts were potentially better than OEM parts then it should costs more than an OEM starter or at least closer to the price. Also the type of greese that is put in is questionable. They try to make some money and steal away customers from OEM parts, by doing this they may use inferior or cheaper parts, I'm not trying to insult the local autostores that try to save us from a high dealer prices, but they're products arent always A+ top grade quality.

I think my flywheel may be to blame in my case, but the starter is drying up.

no unless those 2 bolts are toruqed beyong belief, but with a brake bar you can get them out.

first of all, the starter is VERY easy to install ... the only thing u'll really need is a breaker bar (8-10 bucks).

The starter itself is about 180 from autozone with lifetime warranty.

My brother who has little mechanical experience was able to do this himself ... i just called him over the fone and walked him through it.

I purchased a brand new aftermarket starter for 160.00. New not reman. I think that was a gd. That starter sounds much stronger and sounds as if it spins faster than my original one.

just replaced mine about 3 months ago. $140 from autozone - after "core" exchange. no problem.

only thing you'll probably need to buy is a 16mm or 17mm socket (can't remember exact size) for one of the bolts...and a breaker bar.

about 1 hr of work if you have the tools.

here is a link to my post/question from a few months back

i would def go with the autozone lifetime warranty one which should be around $140, it should only take a half hour or so to do. only thing i would make sure you get a 10 tooth starter rather than an 8 tooth.
