Steering wheel vibrations...

Recently i noticed at speeds above 65 MPH my steering wheel is shaky... Any thoughts on what could be causing this and what might possibly be needed to replace ? TiA !

mine use to do this at like 65k but when i put on a strut bar, it all when away. Might be a time for new struts/shocks/springs, if that is not the case(as you may have new ones on) then do the wheel balancing.

bent rim, different tire pressure on tires, too high of tire pressure, too low of tire pressure. unbalanced wheels. wrongly balanced wheels. in need of alignment. camber kit if car is lowered. or maybe its cause ur car is about to break down...-= )

have you tried going faster ?. you may find if you get it to 75-85 the vibration will dissapear. if this is the case then it is deffo wheel balancing thats the problem.

If I were you I'd be hoping it's just the balancing. I had some Kumho ecsta 712's or seven something and the tires must have had hard spots in 'em cause I balanced a couple times and the shaking would not go away. i was afraid it was the c/v joint cause the boot had busted. (other side busted a few months later.) But I got potenzas when the kumho's had worn (and when I replaced one kumho that busted that I think was the trouble one) to my satisfaction and I've had them since last may. Great tires.

I have the same problem. And i dont think its balancing becaus i've gotten new tires and im rotated and balanced them since. I got new struts as well. im beginning to think its my lower control arms as daniel.castillo stated. i've never been able to get rid of the problem.

I believe that once i replace my lower control arms (both of em) and replace my Strut hardward/bushings. It will drive as good as new. Just my theory.

Old and worn out inner CV joints will give you shimmy, if your tires have been recently balanced , i'd start looking at your suspension components: balljoints, inner tie rods,
LCA bushings, sway bar bushings and wheel bearings. Make sure those are in good shape first.

By replacing driver side CV axle, LCA's and inner tie rods, it made the biggest difference in getting rid of vibrations at 65-80 mph.

both of my CV axles were original from factory , and even though they look great after 150K ( boots not torn) , they had lots of play in them, I went ahead and replaced them as a preventive maintenance.

Getting rid of vibrations and shimmy is long and tedious process, some people are lucky enough and simple wheel re-balance cures the problem, some other are not so fortunate ( i've had to completly rebuild my front end)

good luck and be patient

Nick.

Well im at 83,000mi. and so far ive changed the front struts that was before this started i got new tires not too long ago so im thinking and hoping i just need to get them balanced... i was thinking maybe the rotors needed to be replaced dont know when they were last changed would this cause the vibrations in the steering wheel? Tia!

do you feel brake pulsations when brakes are applied? if yes your rotors are warpped and need to be recut or replaced. If your brakes don't pulsate while braking , it is something else

balance and rotate your tires first

I finally got around to balncing my tires yesterday. Got out of work early and brought it down. I had all four balanced and rotated. Turns out one of my rims is slightly bent but according to the mechanic its still ok. He stuck that one in the back. After he was done we took it for a test drive and its back to driving nice and smooth...

All of the items above may cause vibration, but wheel balance is the cheapest to check and should be first. Once upon a time I was a mechanic and every time a customer would complain about vibration at 65, not 55 or 75, the first thing we did was rebalance the wheels, and I can't even think of a time balance didn't fix the problem. So go to your local tire shop.
