Just trying to solve a problem...non-boost related

I installed a new starter over a week ago... I know I did it 100% complete. After I installed it I started the car, it hesitated for a split second...then turned over.

Now, I tried to crank it after sitting for 3 or hours...and when I attempt to crank it, the RPM guage bounces up to 2k - stays there for about 1/2 a second then drops - Im NOT giving it gas, just turning the key.

If I keep trying it will eventually start up, but WTF is going on with it?
I dropped the tranny 2 nites ago to put the clutch in - bolted everything up **EDIT** (99%) perfect.

IT ACTS as if it's fuel or vacuum related...BUT
I DONT think it's fuel related because its on crank ups only. I doubt I have dirty injectors/fuel lines because all I run is 93, and it was seafoamed not too long ago. It's getting spark for a fact...plugs are fairly new w/ under 10k miles on them....

What confuses me the most is why my car back fires SOMETIMES when attempting to crank it. Common sense tells me backfiring is caused by too much fuel going in. .....but I havent messed with anything fuel related.

Suggestions??

sounds like a grounding problem. The starter gets grounded to the bellhousing, which in turn is connected to the engine, which is grounded to the frame. If you have any oil/ grease in between the engine and the harness, it may cause problems.

Been there, checked that...ground wire-to block is very tight and no grease anywhere near it.

You check to make sure the mating surface between the tranny/ engine was clean?

Could it be a grounding issue?
