ECU Ideas

The other day I started a thread about re-gaining low end after a Mevi installation. Many suggested I get an ECU. I looked at the price tag on said ECU and I thought.....why can't I reprogram it myself?

Here's my idea:
Find someone with a JWT ECU or even Technosquare (manual tranny)
Hook up to it using an EPROM reader and save the read out
Buy a 95 ECU (manual tranny) and hook it up to the EPROM.
Compare the results from both and/or write what I had read from the JWT ECU to my ECU.

Now, I would pay the person that would volunteer for letting me read thier JWT ECU and I would provide the service for the members on the org in my area. (Maybe even at meets?)

My question is.....Does this seem feasible?

I have a BS degree in Computer Science and I am used to making programs from scratch. Aside from this how much do you think this tool would cost? I have seen them far cheaper than the cost of the ECU programming alone and I have even seen places that rent this tool.

Anyone have any ideas?....Am I crazy for thinking I can do this?....any informed input would be appreciated.

If you're smart why would it be crazy. However I don't think you'll get someone to loan you their ECU unless you guarantee them that if you screw their ECU you you'll buy them a new JWT upgraded ECU. It's obviously not impossible to reprogram the ECU you just have to figure out how to do it. And if this is your field of expertise and someone will help you out what do you have to lose?

I have a 95 ECU, 5-speed, but I won't part with it. However, I am interested in following any progress you have in your experiment.

sounds feasible, you might want to talk with AshZ (Ashspec Ecu's) He basically did the exact same thing for 90-96 300ZX's. I'd be down for a reprogrammed ecu at a reasonable cost

I wouldn't exactly be scewing with thier ECU.....i would just be reading it's programming.

Think of it this way: The JWT ECU is a book that costs $600. Someone buys the book. I merely go to them and copy it right in front of them giving them something for letting me read it. I then have a copy of the book for myself.

Sounds interesting, but from what I know jwt and g-force install new daughterboards in the ecu's. Don't know if you could do the same?

Dan, Realistically is not worth it just save the money and get the TEchnosquare ECU or JWT. The hardware needed will not be cheap. Daughterboards go for about $100-120 each. time and risk....here are some links to help you along.

Having a degree typically means a decent paying job ... save for a JWT or TS, or plainly to zack342

Having a degree usually means being broke and real cheap for 4 years at least.....those are hard habits to break.

I was able to find the tool for rent at a shop near by. It is much more reasonable than having to buy it.

And the daughterboard doesn't look to tough...but i guess your right.....ill wait.

The daughter board is the hurdle in this situation.

If I decide to get the MEVI, do I have to upgrade my ECU?
Pros and Cons?
