1998 Maxima Gear Ratio

has anyone tried changing the gear ratios in the trans? this seems like an easy way of creating low end power. i have headers, ypipe and stillen intake - teamed with a higher gear ratio my maxima should rock and still get desent gas mileage.

thanks n advance

When you state higher, do you mean higher numerically, or taller? Because those are actually opposite of each other. mzmtg found a source once for the 4g 5M aka RS5F50A

um like a 3.55 to 3.75 ratio over the stock ratio

Stock is 3.823 and yes higher numerical reading will result in a shorter gear, and higher RPM at lower speeds, resulting finally in lower (worse) gas mileage..

do you know where or how to get a higher ratio? is there just one gear i can change out or do i have to rebuild the trans?

I don't know .. all I know is what it comes with. If you really want to mess with it and not have to crack oepn the tranny, use different size of tires.

Tire diameter = mph x gear ratio x 336 /Rpm

Gear ratio = rpm x tire diameter /Mph x 336

i know rear axle cars you can just swap the drive gear - say you have a 2.75 you could just change it out for a 4.11 and it makes a huge difference.

Same here, the F/D = final drive but the 5M maxima already runs pretty high RPM when cruising @ 75 mph.. so I'm not sure if this would be all that good for a daily driver.

Are you sure about that?
Not according to the forumula ...

BTW headers/y-pipe have no effect on rpm vs speed. Only gear ratios do, it's a mechical system (MPH vs RPM)

yep - before the headers ypipe and intake it was around 30k
less stress on motor = less rpm

also the headers, ypipe and intake make this car scream after 60 mph - it pulls way over 100 hard. not to mention sounds cool without being too loud.

Yes it does make a difference in torque and also rev limiter helps with the MEVI.

I do not have the time now to dig up the old threads, but if you don't believe me, I was a like you that thought it did make a differeence, until I learned from the big dogs on the org. I also snapped that it's a mechanical system and therfore what your speedo reads and tach are related and no matter what tires you have or mods they'll always have the same relation, even though they wont be correct, they'll still have the same relation inside the cabin... unless you cahnge the gear ratios.

um ok whatever that meant - if your motor has less strain it can affect rpm - ask the big dogs. all i know is that when i changed to headers, ypipe and intake the rpms dropped - cant explain it but thats what happened.

Depends what year but try just the final drive ratio... The altima guys were going to try it with an older year altima, but I haven't checked out the site in a while, altimas.net ..

MODS that don't have anything to do with the transmission or the resulting final drive ratio will not effect rpm at a given MPH.

The formula remains the same for all ratio's
MPH=(engine RPM X Tire Radius) / (Final Gear Ratio X 168)

For you GXE guys 5speed guys:
5th= 0.795
Final Drive Ratio= 3.823

MPH=(engine RPM X Tire Radius) / (Final Gear Ratio X 168)

Engine rpm =6,550rpms

Tire Radius (inches): aspect ratio(205 X .65=133.25)X .0394 (mm to inch conv.) = 5.25in
5.25 + 15(rim size) X .5
5.25 + 7.5=12.75

Final Gear Ratio: gear ratio (3.285=1st gear) X final drive (3.823)=
12.558555

MPH = 83512.5 / .795 X 3.823 X 168

MPH = 83512.5 / 510.59988

MPH = 163.56mph@6,550rpm(about 24.97mph / 1,000rpm)

No .. not that I know. The only f/d change I ever remember is a 6M f/d from an 04 to a 5.5g (02-03)

5 speed swap is the best, I'm actually in the process right now procuring all the parts..

back to the rpm thing - i have an experiment that will prove my theory. close off you intake and stuff a rag in you exhaust pipe - just let in a minimal amount of air flow - see what happens to your rpms. motor will have to push harder to achieve same speed as before.

i really like me auto just want a little more low end power - man i would love to find a 4.17 gear for the auto maxima. i think the person that came up woth one could make some $$$$$

As the engine spins, so will the transmission, so will the car and the speed will increase.

they're connected mechanically ..

It's already at 3.7899, it would give pretty minimal gains... riding on 205/55's will give nearly the same as a 4.17 F/D do the math ...

I think your rpm theory is best described as --> the engine is at a lower rpm to make the same hp as prior to the mods, hence the engine isn't "working" as hard as it used to when going 60, 75 etc ...

Oh **** *****, it's 3.619 for the 4th gne ... 3.7899 is for the 5g ... Still the 205/55's will do the trick

i think the 4.17 would give 1st the push it needs. 1st in the auto maxima is pretty weak until you get up into the higher rpms

Did you not read my post? Get smaller diameter tires ... or a launch shot of N2O ..

i have 2001 maxima rims and tires so i dont know my ratio but noticed the bigger rims slowed 0-60 down slightly.

by the way he was right about the rpm thing - i dont know why my rpm are so low maybe the 2001 rims and tires are doing it. 235 45 17s - dont know if i can go any more low profile than 235 45 17s
