87 or 89 octane?

I don't know how u people put 87 in your Maximas. Its like feeding yourself shait all day. Sure you can live off of it but wouldnt u rather have something better. It's not worth 3 dollar savings on a full fill-up to keep my car from nothing but the best. Car runs cleaner and better on 93. But thats just me maybe yall dont care for your car as much.

Perhaps some of the more knowledgeable .orgers could weigh in on the answer to this question

It has been stated that use of 87 octane gasoline may not damage the knock sensor of the Maxima but will adversely affect its performance. I have never used 87 octane in the 10 years 8 months I've owned my car, but I have used 89 a fair bit with no discernible effect on performance relative to 92 octane. Precisely how can the life expectancy of a VQ30DE be affected by running lower than 91 octane gasoline, ie. what will be ruined? I think the short answer is nothing.

I am presently running a recently-introduced gas made by Canadian-based Husky (a reputable chain), its 90 octane and sells for the same price as 87. It's as close to 91 as d@mn is to swearing for my liking.

Any thoughts.

ive been running 87 since i got the car, (over a year ago) not only does it run perfectly and perform the same, i also get great gas mileage and i saved probably around $400.

I doubt that in more ways than one. I can put money down it does not perform the same. Nor that u save anywhere near $400 a year from using 87 and not 93, unless u put like 30k a year on your car.

look guys... heres how i gauge my car performing the same. My bro has a 4rth gen also, same mods, plus he has an intake. We race all the time. he uses 91, i use 87. I easily keep up with him, and usually beat him. Hmmmm... how much better does my car have to perform? And sorry its not $400, but over $300 you would save. Tell me why i should waste $300 for something that does nothin extra for my car?

I think some of you dont understand what fuel does. It is NOT going to make your perform better or add hp/tq. It will simply make sure your car doesnt ping. I used to think the same thing until a VERY respected old school domestic guy explained it to me. With a 10:1 compression motor it is good to run 91 octane, **** with old domestics it is a MUST! You can get away with running 89 but for the extra $.10 wouldnt you rather have the added security and know on that hot *** day when you are running the rpm way up to the limiter that you will not ping.

If a car is desingned for reguar unleaded putting in the higher octane stuff won't do anything, besides waste your money. If your car (ie. the Maxima) was designed for the higher octane fuel, putting in a lower octane fuel than what is supposed to go in there WILL effect performance.

I think the car manufactures got some underground deals goin on with the gas companies to get them to say higher than what is necessary. I get the cheapest and runs perfect. Mr. Bush's business franchise and those middle eastern contries don't get my extra few bucks per fill up!

93 octane for years, now 98 octane ! 87 and 89 octane i would use in a lawnmower, unless i lived ontop of a very high mountain.

I got one word..... DETONATION! That's what happens when you use low octane fuel. Bad for your engine no matter how you look at it.

So are you saying by running 87 octane and getting a periodic knock will kill the knock sensor? I ran 87 for about six months and then went to 89 for about 3 months and the price of gas I reverted to 87, got check engine light right away, that says knock sensor is bad. I reset it and it ran a day no light than it came on again. Do you think if I go back to 89 or higher light will stay out? Maybe ??? I have no idea what previous owner used, I bought it with 60K

To get 91 octane, simply add an equal # of gallons of 87 & 93 octane.

The answer to all these questions are in the FAQ. All you guys have to do is read. The CEL light doesn't always mean KS. Pull the codes, the procedure is in the How-To FAQ. It will also give you the link to DECODE the ecu code. Getting the periodic knock will ultimately damage your engine.

You wont get the full potential of your mods w/o using high grade fuel, if you're talking about performance mods. And at $3 more per tank, it will take many many tankfuls to take advantage of the money saved ...
