Need New CV Boot..Replace Axle Too?
My front right CV boot is torn and needs to be replaced quickly. A local shop recommended I replace the axle at the same time (even though they didn't look inspect the car yet but said this was a good idea)..Should I get:
a new axle?
a rebuilt axle?
or neither, just replace the CV boot?

go to PepBoys or Autzone and get a whole new(rebuilt)axel... and trust me its not worth your time and money to have someone only swap the boot itself. I had both of my front axels swapped in about an hour to give you a rough time for installation, that was with the help of a friend too.

about 60 bucks + core. They aren't that bad, but year def change the axle, not just the boot. I did both of mine a few months back, took me a lil long since i bought the wrong axle initally, but definately worth it. My CVs had been torn all winter, and i had started to hear the clicking, so i knew i needed em

I tend to be on the other side in this discussion. The cheap rebuilt axles are nowhere near the quality of the OEM ones. If you know your boots have just torn recently, I would opt for just having the boots replaced. Thats what I did on mine. I had noticed the rip a day or two after it happend (I was doing an oil change - no rip, two days layer, grease on the rim). I took it to a shop, they checked the joint and said it was fine - so just rebooted it for me.
If you do decide to replace the axle, I recommend raxles.com - they seem to have a good reputation around here (quality parts, good service, brand new as opposed to rebuilt axles).
Cheers.

I have not determined whether the axles need to changed. Then again, I have 160K miles so it probably wouldn't hurt to have a little piece of mind.
I did request a quote from raxles (to compare to the price of a rebuild). Here's what I got:
<<
The axles for your 1996 Maxima are $119.99 for the driver side and $149.99
for the passenger side.
We have them in stock. The passenger side comes COMPLETE with the support
bearing assembly (An
industry exclusive).
Also, please keep in mind when comparing prices
that at Raxles we use NEW joints on all of our axles. (Also
industry exclusive)(See our website www.raxles.com/nogrind.htm
for further elaboration on this important fact).
We build these out of HD NEW components using Amsoil synthetic grease, new nuts, cotter pins,
and the BEST CV boots.
We charge no core charge "up front" and we also pay the return freight on
your old axles via an UPS ARS pre-paid return label included with your
order.
>>
Of course this quote is for my open differential..i'm trying to find out how much for VLSD.
Does anyone know how universal these axles are? For example would they work with a 01 tranny with an open differential? Trying to determine what my options will be...
