Just failed smog check

The CO and NO is fine, but the HC is a little bit more than allowed. Max allowed is 54 at 15mph test and 37 at 25mph test, I have 58 and 49. My car has a cold air intake and a Y pipe. Does anyone have similar problem and how do you get your car pass the smog check?

Did you let it warm up beforehand? Do you have the main cat still in place?

Get the car to operating temp then do some spirited driving. Take the car in, don't turn it off and get it tested. You'll pass.

How far did you drive and at what speed and how long was the engine on before you were tested?

drove about 2 miles and sitting with the engine on for 5 mins. I guess that isn't enough. I will drive at least 5 miles and do some pedal to the metal driving before the test again tomorrow

I say drive on the freeway at least 10-15 minutes or in town 20 minutes. That'll get it nice and warmed up. You don't need to go pedal to the metal. Just get it warmed up. I thought everyone knew to get their car warmed up properly before testing emissions. Hmm...
Let us know how it turns out tomorrow.....thanks...

Drive further and warm the car up longer. Don't turn it off when you get to emissions testing.

When was the last time you changed your spark plugs, air filter, oil & filter?

if you have a y-pipe then your precats are gone, with out the precats you'll fail if its not warm, you need to let it warm up for the actual cat to work

I'm f***ed!! I went to do the smog check after the car warmed up completly, and I still failed the god damn smog check. I need ideas what I need to fix to pass the smog check. My worst case is borrow a stock y pipe from someone to pass the test but I really don't want to do that. HELP ME PLEASE.

What were your readings relative to the first failed test? Do you still have your stock air box? What make of y-pipe do you have? What did you do with your OEM y-pipe? They are quite expensive and you should have hung on to it.

Also what year is your car and how many miles are on it?

How old is your CAT? it is quite possible that your cat is just old and needs to be replaced.
