If I were you I'd get a early 1990's era jeep or equivalent 4WD vehicle with good ground clearance. Cheap as hell so you won't give a shiit about "scratching" it, or denting it for that matter.
I sure as heck wouldn't take a brand new vehicle off-roading! It would kill me worrying that my $25k car/SUV was about to take a beating. SUV's are much more expensive (generally) to fix than cars when they sustain minor body damage (yes, there have been many studies reporting this so don't report with personal anecdote to the contrary).
SUV's don't have sturdier paint, so will scratch badly, too. Treat your max nice, and get a junker for the trails.
