This is probably the biggest pain in the *** before paint. I did this not too long ago. Basically you take the door panels off. And you have to disconnect all of the pins that hold it on. Then remove the rods and the door handle will pop out. It took me like 45 minutes per door and would have taken me about an hour or more to put them back on but the body shop guys were nice enough to do it for me for no extra charge.

Each door handle has two bolts, one on each side. The fronts are a peice of cake and easy to get to.
The rears are much harder due to the tight space.
When you pull the door panelsoff you will see what Im talking about.

Are they bolts and not clips and I am remembering wrong or are you adding to it?

There are two bolts with nuts that attach the actual exterior handles to the door.
The handles attach to the inner door handle with the rods and plastic clips.
I recently swapped my Chrome exterior handles with body colored handles.
