to that.

The first things to check (IMHO):

1. the starter needing either replacement or re-greasing - check www.motorvate.ca for more details
2. belts slipping - you can try to tighten the accessory belt and see if that solves the problem.

I think its your starter. My Max makes a whirring sound on cold starts. I know the starter needs to be re-greased or replaced.....I just haven't done it yet. I think I'll replace it for around $150 - $200 rather then mess around with the regrease option. Re-man starters come with a warranty, the re-grease job doesn't.

If your belts were loose the sound would be a shrill squeal that is really annoying. Tighten, or replace depending on age, the belt and you should be fine. Replacing the belts is easy. Use Goodyear Gatorbacks, they are tougher and last longer then other belts. I got both belts for my Max for $25 including tax at AutoZone in Atlanta.

If you have concluded that it is the starter based on a few posts by random people on the internet who have not seen the car or even heard the sound then...... find a local org member or take it to a shop to make sure you get the correct diagnosis... unless you have 200 bucks to throw away on a starter that might not even be the problem.

where i work i see maximas all the time and i would say 3 out of 5 4th gens make that screeching noise when starting up, including mine...im not going to replace it until it doesnt work anymore, the noise isnt much of a concern for me, as long as it works.

All you need to do is regrease the starter to rid yourself of that noise. Not a difficult job. Just make sure you're paying attention to how everything fit back together or else you'll spend two days like I did ripping apart my car six times troubleshooting it.
My car used to do that occasionally, and it hasn't happened since.

I think it's just 2 bolts and a plug. 10 minute job.

The write-up is in the Haynes manual. Where is yours? It's required reading.

Go to www.motorvate.ca - there is a nice how-to, including re-lubing it if you choose to go that route.

mines does it once in a while as well. more of a squeal. really quick maybe 1 sec long. Only on first start ups. i always thought it was power steering pump or the accessoires belt. I mean it doesn't bother me all too much either. I'm not going to try and replace anything tho.

mine was making a "scoooooot" noise first thing in the morning, then as it warmed it and crunk a few times, it went away. I had it replaced and now its great. Pep boys sells them for about 159 and Advanced Auto for 138.

Mine is a 97 so maybe it was time. I'm about to sell the car though. I love it, but she has to go. I will post it soon, but I'm a newb

Wack it with a hammer if it leaves you stranded... that will work for the last few times before it totally dies.
