KS checking, am I doing this right?
KS checking, am I doing this right?
I posted in another thread about my error codes on my 98 5sp GXE for multiple cylinder misfire and knock sensor. I have since replaced my spark plugs and thought I was good to go, however the CEL came back on again
This time I thought I'd go ahead and check the knock sensor as prescribed in the FAQ. I found what I thought to be Pin 2 of the KS harness as shown in the picture below
and put one end of the multimeter on that and then the other end on the negative terminal of the battery. The reader showed 4.5 M ohms. If I connected the multimeter to both pins it showed 0 on my reader, does this mean the sensor is still good? If it is, what else could be causing this CEL?

Was any work or modifications or anything like that recently done? or did the code just come up under normal driving/daily use etc...
If you're getting multiple misfires I'd be checking coils and injectors first. Try the power balance method... unplug a coil/injector one cylinder at a time with the car idling. If it doesn't cause a stutter or rpm change then that's the culprit.

If the CEL codes show multiple cylinder misfire, then the KS code is just being tripped by that first failure. Fix the misfire issue first, reset the ECU and then check again for codes in a few days - if the KS code reposts, then you have a bad KS. You checked the KS correctly. There have been cases (mine included) where the resistance test shows the KS is ok, yet the sensor is still bad (0304 code keeps reposting).
As DandyMax already said, multiple cylinder misfire could be bad coil(s). What plugs did you swap in? NGK copper or platinums I hope.

Go get the NGK platinums or the NGK copper plugs that are recommended at least 5 times each day around here... put those in, reset the ECU and then come back and let us know how the car drives.
