Converting a 1995 Cali. Spec to a 1995 Fed. Spec

I have an opportunity to purchase another Maxima however it is from California and I understand that the emmisions equipment is alot more restrictive.

My plans for this Maxima include installing my Turbo so I would like to be able to make as much power without being restricted.

Now my questions is can a Cali Spec car be transformed into a Federal Spec?

If so what needs to be changed? Or would I be better of just starting with a Federal Spec?

Thanks Guys!

JP

If you want to remove the restrictive part of the emissions of a cali spec car, you just need to invest in headers instead of the y-pipe.

For us Cali Spec cars, the y-pipe can only eliminate 1 of the 2 precats.

So full headers is the only way to remove both restrictive precats.

In other words, if you're going turbo you're already going to be replacing everything that's different about a cali spec as far as restrictions anyway. So don't worry about it

only 99+ Cali specs (01+ maximas from are all cali spec) have the huge precat that is not removed with the y pipe. 95-98's precats are completely removed with a y pipe.

Most of the other emissions equipment is smaller stuff. Although the 95 Fed spec has very little emissions stuff compared to any maxima after it, it is not a huge deal. You can remove it all anyway with some work. EGR and the precats are the worst parts and they all come with that.

Does anyone know if I do change out the Cali Spec Parts if I can avoid a check engine light by swapping in a Fed. Spec ECU?

Thanks!

what are you talking about?

there is only one pre cat , and that is on the factory y-pipe. there is no other pre cats on the headers. I have a 99 GLE. I see this before.

You better remove your Factory y-pipe to free up some emissions restrictive.
The reason cali spec has less pickup because there is more Restriction involves with the ECU and there are extra O2 sensors.

By removing the Headers, you are not going to gain a lot unless you are going with a SC or a Turbo kit.

Get a Y-PIPE you will notice a huge gain. Trust me on this.

I have a 97 Cali Spec.

= 2 pre cats, Y-pipe only removes one.

a 95 cali is the same as any 96-98. 95 fed specs have minor differences such as mechanical evap controls, engine bay mounted charcoal canister, and different wiring. its not worth it. you wont gain any power.

yes you will. you gain 3-4 hp by eliminating the precat in the headers. dyno proven.

One user did this without the use of aftermarket headers. can't remember/find the link.

Can anyone help a brother out? thanks

Can someone take a picture of the precats in the stock Y-pipe? On my Fed-spec 96, I could only locate one precat on the front bank pipe and none on the rear bank pipe.
