A/C blowing warm after charge

My a/c wasnt running as cold as it should so i bought a recharge kit. The kit came with a pressure gadge. When i tested the pressure it was too high. I released all the pressure/freon and put in new freon to the pressure it should be at. After doing that i drove the car and the a/c is is now blowing warm air. Does anyone know what the problem could be.

Thanks
tom

Something tells me you didn't charge it correctly.

The pressure should not have been too high, that’s just plain strange.
Make sure you are using the gauge correctly.
Like the right units and so forth.
Maybe the gauge is broken…?

I agree, double-check the gauge. It shouldn't of been high in the first place.
Secondly, check if its the right refrigerant. I don't know what was put into the 96. Some of the new refrigerants have less cooling capacity.

The gauges that come with the freon kit are usually pretty inaccurate. It just gives you an idea of what are of pressure is in your system. If you didn't put in enough freon then you'd be getting warm air. If you put too much, you probably blew a gasket and now there's a small leak which is slowly leaking your fresh freon away. Check the pressure again and see if it has gone down.

A 96 maxima most likely uses r-134a. Did yoy add any freon oil? If not you may need to. This oil is usually put in before adding the freon because it conditions the gaskets. However, you can never know if you need it or not so i just wouldn't add any because you most likely will not need it.

If i recall correctly, the minimum amount of freon on the 4th gen. is .65kg+-.05 right? I failed chem so i don't know what the conversion factors would be into oz's but i'm sure it's around only one can of freon. What I'm saying is.
Adding too much = 2+ cans

You could possibly have a leak....... somewhere. My 3rd Gen, I went to get charged and it blew cold until it all leaked out. Come to find out, I needed a new dryer and A/C condenser. Just a thought. Good luck.

How much did you pay for the dryer and condensor?

you should only need 1.5-1.75lbs of 134a to fill your max. Obviously you have some freon in the system or the compressor wouldn't even turn on. How much did you add with the recharge kit?

If not enough r134 was added the compressor might not be coming on. Have you checked to see if the compressor clutch is engaged?
Was the engine running and a/c on when you checked the pressure with your gauge. Earlier this summer my new to me Max was blowing warm air. When I checked with the car off I got a reading of 70psi. After I started it up and jumpered the pressure switch to get the compressor to work the gauge read 5psi. What I ended up doing was venting that little bit of pressure then borrowing a vacuum pump and manifold gauges from autozone. I vaccumed the system for 2 hours and she held pressure for half an hour, so I dont think I had a leak. I then filled the system with two 12oz cans of r134 and one 2oz can of the oil charge. The manifold gauge readings were 35 psi on the low side and 260 on the high side. Its been 105+ for the past few weeks and knock wood, she's been blowing nice cold air. I'll be going to walmart this weekend to pick up a thermometer so I can measure the air vent temps. I think it is supposed to be at least 40º below the outside air ambient temp.
