In some cars, the brake master cylinder holds the fluid for both the clutch and brake systems.
Sometimes, a spongy brake pedal can indicate a worn or leaky master cylinder. A pedal with lots of travel...all the way to the floor is also a sign there may be a problem.
Things that can make a master cylinder go bad...time, bad seals, pitted walls on the inside of the cylinder...bad dumb luck.
