Tranny question.

The other day, 2 days ago, i was at a stop light. when it turned green, i put it into first gear then started driving. when i pushed my clutch and tried to shift into 2nd gear, it seemed like my shifter was stuck for about 3 seconds, then it slipped out and i put it into 2nd gear. For those 3 seconds, i was like......"Man not again" I hoping that there is nothing wrong with my tranny.

ever since then, it hasn't happened again, but i do remember, my clutch has been slipping these days for the past 2-3 weeks. Can the cause of this be because of the clutch? or is it the tranny? What do you guys think?

Im hoping that it's only the clutch, cuz if it is my tranny, i will be driving it until it breaks down on me and i might have to take the bus around i guess. Cant afford a tranny rebuild again.
Anyone HELP>? need to fix before it becomes a major problem.

If it's slipping probably just your clutch. Does it slip everytime you drive it?

It slips everytime i bang it into gear, but can a slipping clutch cause my gear to get stuck for 3-5 seconds?
It only happened twice in one day, and that was last week. It hasn't happened again. Just afraid that it might be my tranny going out. Do you have any idea?

Are you losing any clutch fluid? Have you ever replaced the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder?

Well since your clutch system is an intergral part of your tranny, yes......

Think about how a clutch system works, then apply it to what your clutch is doing now....

What is the mileage on the car now? What was the mileage on the car when the tranny was rebuilt? Did a reputable transmission specialist rebuild the tranny? I trust it wasn't a stealership. Have you taken the car back to where the tranny was rebuilt and asked for an opinion?

i have rebuilt it about a 1.5 years ago. i had a year warranty on it, and i dont think they would do a shady job on the cars because they did have a lot of customer's there, but who knows, people these days you cant trust anybody.
anyways.....they have changed owners already so i have no one to take it to for now. curently have 136k on the car, about 80k on the motor, no more than 15k on the new rebuilt tranny.

Then I suspect your fears of a failing tranny are probably unfounded and in all likelihood your clutch is on the way out. Have you checked and/or replaced the transaxle gear oil?

no actually, i havent changed my oil yet, i just ordered some tranny oil and im guessing its coming in this thursday, and that's when i plan on doing the change.
If the tranny oil is old, can that cause the clutch to slip?

I'm not sure, but it wouldn't hurt to change it. I had mine changed about 3 months ago at 57K. It had been in there since day 1 and was black. I didn't like the viscosity of it either. Tne new stuff is more of an amber or honey color. I'm going to change it every 30K from now on. It's cheaper than an oil change to do at the luby-loo I went to and is good preventative maintenance. My tranny may be shifting a little smoother, particularly in 1 to 2 shifts although it could be placebo effect.

Whatever you do, make sure you use GL-4 gear oil, and NOT GL-5 or some GL-4/5 blend!
