Brake Question.

Ok so right before past weekend, I come to a stop at a light and hear "vvvggggggggggggggg" from the rear I think. It's only when I brake lightly and the brakes have to be applied at exactly certain point, if you know what I'm talking about. It's not a squeeking noise when you get after changing pads or something. More like a vibrating sorta noise like I said in the beginning vvvvvggggggggggg.... and it's VERY loud if I apply just right amount of brakes.

Well anyways, I took it to a tiny shop and asked what can be wrong. He said that it's probably dirt or grind built up on the pad and he said after I brake hard for a day, it should go away. But it hasn't so I'm asking you guys before I take it to a better shop to get it actually looked at. I looked at it and pads are there with good amount left, and no rotor damage or warping. Maybe caliper is getting loose or something?.... I don't know but hopefully it doesn't hurt my wallet.

Thanks.

P.S. Oh and my handle vibrates when I'm in the highway going 60~80 (I didn't go pass 80 so I don't know after that) lot more around 70ish. Is that just balancing needed? I'm afraid that it might be joints or axle or something cause I bought new rims/tires and balanced them and it was shaking, unless they did it wrong.

did you take the wheel off and inspect the rotor? Also, I'd get a caliper tool from an autoparts store (rent for free!) and test the action of your calipers. Take the caliper off of hub, and have an assistant press on your brake pedal slightly. Then screw the caliper back in (hence why you need the caliper tool, not just a c clamp), and see if it moves freely. If not, that is probably your problem, and once it gets completely stuck (as it happened in my case) it will eat through your brake pad, then start eating into your rotor. One day my rear brakes were fine, the next day at low speeds it sounds like a damn airplane is flying overhead.

I'm starting to suspect that it's the caliper... I guess I'll have to take it into a shop because I don't wanna bother doing it myself and making things worse.

I haven't taken my car to the shop yet but someone today told me that when pads are worn all the way down, it's made to make this kind of noise naturally, signalling the time for change in pads. Has anyone experience this?

The wear indicators would make a high-pitched metal-on-metal squeak...

mmm.. interesting... I think it might actually be the brakes cause I had to change my front ones few months ago and now I remember guy told me that rear ones are just "ok for now"...
