How to read Service engine soon code?

I got the service engine for a few days now. I read the stickies and this morning tried to do it on my 99 Maxima. it is so hard to get to the ECU and almost impossible to see the little screw, I mistakenly try to use a little flat screwdriver but nothing (actually messed the fragil plastic screw a little), re-read stickies and found the one for 99 which is slightly different than 95-98, needs a phillips screwdiver instead of flat. Well will try again tomorrow; the question is where to read the flashing lights/code? at the same ecu computer or on the dashboard where the light is on? It doesn't specify on sticky. Hopefully works out tomorrow, I think Autoparts charge you $20 to put the computer on your car "Autozone" and free if you buy the parts there. Otherwise will have to buy the code reader for I think $30-60 so I can reuse in the future.
Please advise guys and gracias in advance.

Yeah, it will flash the MIL/CEL in the lower right corner of the gauge pod near the tach. Since you're read the stickies I'll assume you know how to read and count the flashes. Also, be gently with the screw but make sure when you're done you turn it all the way back to original starting point or you'll have continued problems. Good luck - hope it's nothing major.
