5th Gen Tranny advice

I am going to buy a new tranny and am wondering what would be the best buy for an LSD 5 speed tranny. should i go with the 5th gen or the I30 and also if anyone has any good prices on this item or anywhere in New England who might have one that would help alot. Thanks

www.car-part.com is your friend. Go with the 5th gen. Stronger third gear.

You'll probably need axles. If your car has ABS, make sure the axles come from a car with ABS as well as the same type of transmission as what you're buying.

Go with the I30 lsd. I have read some posts that the ae tranny will throw your speedo off because it used a different speed sensor. Plus this talk of the 3rd gear being stronger (not as in it pulls harder as the ratios are the same) is (as far as I can tell) speculation.

With the I30, all you need are lsd axles and your set. Everything is a direct swap.

I believe both are pretty hard to find as is. I saw go with the 5th gen seeing how the I30s were subject to the bearing faulire like the rest of the 4th gens.

Yes, 5th gens are less prone to it but not immune. Way to go Nissan...

I dont think they are less likely to occur in the 5th gen. The reason it is just now croping up for them is the fact that a lot of thes guys are just now getting to the milage point where the problem occurs. As time goes on we will be able to tell or not.

I hope at least for my next tranny that they wised up on that particular 5h gen. replacing these leaky trannies is getting real old fast.

I've been thinking about swapping in 6-speed tranny from an '02 max on my '96 I30t because i have repeated leaky tranny problems as well...anyone know if this is even possible???

6 speed tranny will work, but it is by no means bolt on. Only 2 people have done it and they said it wasn't worth it. Converting to cable shift is a major pain and I am not sure if the flywheel is the same.

5th gen 5 speeds do have a stronger 3rd gear. Those who have taken it apart have seen it to be physically larger. I believe Nissan also said they made the 3rd gear syncro better too. I am not sure about the bearing problem.

IMO the VLSD is cool and all but I would rather a stronger third from a 5th gen then just the LSD from a A32 I30. The VLSD will not make your traction problems go away.

If you really want to you can use the internals from a 00-01 Altima and get shorter 1st, 2nd and 3rd, same 4th and taller 5th, but you have to put all the Altima internals into the Maxima housing. The Altima 3rd gear is stronger too I think.

if your is kinda soft, check for leaks and bleeding may not be a bad idea. From what I've heard clutch responce is fairly close to 4th gen stock.

It depends on the clutch. The tranny really don't have much to do with it. I know the 5th gen clutch is heavier duty, but is still pretty easy to drive.

5th gen clutch is a very civil clutch. I haven't driven stick in nine years and after four days, I've already got the engagement point down.

does the speed sensor automatically come with the 5th gen tranny or do you buy it seperately?

i read that your speedometer wont work if you use a 4th gen sensor with a 5th gen tranny.

I'm currently using a 4th gen 5spd speed sensor in my 00 5spd trans. My 4th gen auto speed sensor worked too but it was inaccurate.

It's bolted to the top of the trans with a single 10mm bolt.
