Should i get 16 or 17in rims? If i get 17 what kind of tire should i get so that i wont blow one when i hit a pot hole or bend the rim when i hit a pot hole? Plus would the 17 in tire rub anything when i turn. What are some good affordable tires to buy?
thanks Brandon

well look at my signature pic, i have 225/45/17's on Konig Monsoons. NO rubbing, not too bad on bumps either. My boy Joe with his 96max has the same tires but different rims on a stock suspension and the car feels the same as it did with stock rims on it.
If your that worried about bumps, you can easily fit 225/50/17's on 17" rims in the wheel wells. But then you loose the "sport look"

hope that helps...

I have 17" rims and tires
I have Enkei's new Arashi 17 x 7 rims (19 pounds) and Yokohama's AVS db 235/45/17 tires ( made to give a quieter ride )
and no, they don't rub the walls, but they do take more energy from your engine.

17"
Go with the 17" rims, definetly. I was wrestling with the same decision a year ago. After a year, I have been very happy with my choice of Enkei RP02 rims and 225/45/17 Pirelli P7000 supersports although the pirellis live up to their stereotype of fast wearing (Khumhos next). The look is great, no rubbing under any condition, and the ride is still very tolerable given the performance trade-off. Make the right decision, go with 17"

How are the roads where you live ?
Are you driving on some nice flat LA roads ? Or hobnobbing it down the potholes of Boston ? 17" wheels look nice but _will_ bend in the pothole regions of the country. Not "might", but "will". You have to run the pressure high to preserve them and that leads to a bouncy, hard ride with less control. They will also reduce acceleration if you are a performance hound. 16" is a better all around choice. But, if we made all of our choices based on security and safety, there wouldn't be any other mods happening around here.

17" & Hard roads
Ok, my setup is as follows:
Eibach Springs
Tokico Struts
17" Enkei RP02
Pirelli P7000 Supersport 225/45/17
I have extensive experience running these on the neglected streets of Philadelphia, and as long as you use reasonable discretion in negotiating the potholes and etc, you shouldn't have any problems. I have yet to bend a rim or blow a tire. Yes the ride will be more harsh, and you will have to pay more for tires, but what are you trying to accomplish? If you are trying to get the most out of your Maxima and the modifications you have made, then the 17" are the way to go. If you are going purely for looks and are trying to save cash and sensibility, then the 16" are probably the way to go... In the end, it is up to you and how far you are trying to go. Personally, I know that I would end up kicking myself in the *** later down the road if I got the 16". Hope this helps.

i have it bad here
in NJ, i have 18x8 TR Motorsport Sniper rims (21 lbs) & 235/40/18 Kuhmo's. I also have Eibach and Tokico, it is ruff as hell on the NJ potholed roads but the handling is awesome, sure its slower than when i put my 15's on(which i sold) needed more money for tires on the 18's that for sure. All in all i like 18's i think 17's looked to small on the max, def get some 17's if ur thinkin in between 17 and 16.

tire sizw
It all depends on where you live, I live in the bronx, nyc.
the roads here are unreal, I went threw 2 concept neepers 17"/45/235 in one year! (bruckner expressway is under construction)I switched to konigs 17"/50/225 & It's a whole new world.Spots where I slowed to 35 I now blast threw at 60, you have to weight your options, what you want according to your area.urban=50 subarbs=45 country=240
I laugh when I see guys with 17"/245/40's slow down to take a bump in the city. The Maxima is a great car and if set up right will handle any situation.Dont build your car to fit the mags, those guy run on perfect tracks & tow there cars home!
just my 2 cents

Just for looks
kash, obviously 16" are an improvement, but yes, 17" do provide more performance as a result of the increased contact patch and shortened sidewall. Do you use premium or super unleaded? Same thing. And if there is little to sacrifice in the way of ride comfort, then I think it is worth it, that is all I was saying.
