Service Engine soon light on

Went to my local mechanic today to have my check engine light checked. There are two problems with my engine. First problem is the EGR valve malfunction and the second problem is the knock sensor.

I need your advice on what to do so I can pass my inspection. The mechanic told me to change three parts. EGR Valve, EGR sensor and Knock sensor.

I've researched into this problem before and some people fix the EGR problem by either cleaning out the carbon or changing the part. Since the computer said the EGR valve is malfunction should I just change it? Also do I need to change the EGR sensor?

As for the knock sensor, what is the purpose of it? Is it hard to get it? My mechanic said it somewhere in the manifold and the labor is expensive because he has to disasemble alot of parts in the engine to get to the knock sensor.

As for the EGR valve what else needs to be changed or clean when doing this?

I will be purchasing the part from online since it's cheaper. Where are some good websites that sells OEM parts for cheap?

Thanks

I *think* the EGR sensor is what usually trips the code.
The KS detects 'knock' or pinging. - It's VERY easy to change if you have a FED-SPEC.

Fix the EGR problem first and reset the ECU. The knock sensor code shows up with just about anything.

I have a 99 SE how much for your EGR valve? i'm looking to buy a brand new one though cause it's not that expensive.

So I should fix the EGR vavle stuff first right? Just replace the valva and sensor? Can that be done by my self if I had the right tools? What tools do I need and is there an online tutorial on how to do this?

Did you check your codes? Thats the first step with a CEL.

It is not possible that chaning the air filter would that cause a CEL to appear. There is no sensor for "dirt in the intake".

Having an o2 sensor go at 90K miles is not uncommon either.

You can't do anyting till you check the codes. Look in the stickies, read the discription of your problem and go from there.

Your problem is not with the EGR valve itself, Egr valves hardly fail, I too had EGR issues in the past. My problem was resolved by replacing EGR solenoid valve, which is located in the passageway near the KS, very easy to replace, costs about $60-80. If you've never had your KS replaced, chances are this is faulty, again, easy to replace..(read the how to stickies).

DO NOT let ur mechanic or any machanic take a bunch of crap apart to change ur knock sensor! they dont neeeed to. if u decide to let the mechanic do it, maybe he'll charge u a whole lot less if u tell him all he needs is a long extension and one of those u joints or wutever u call them. the mechanic probably already knows that but tryin to make a little extra $$$$....but like everyone said its easy

How do I change the EGR Solenoid valve? I found the DIY for the knock sensor but I didn't find any guides for the EGR solenoid. Can some link me please? Thanks

Dude, until you check your codes, all you're going to get is blind speculation. Check the codes, post back with them, then go from there. And if the mechanic was messing with the air filter, make sure the MAF and other sensors around there are plugged in.

EGRC solenoid is located near the entrance of where the KS is, just before . To take this sucker off it's just one 10mm (IIRC) nut underneath. A small wrench will do that.
egr solenoid part # The Nissan part number is 14956-31u10
