need help choosing muffler

I need to replace my old rusted oem muffler with a new one. I want to replace it with a muffler that makes a "high strung sound" almost like an "energetic whine" but is NOT lawnmowerish like many modded hondas, and not a deep growl like most of the aftermarket mufflers for the maxima (from what i understand). Any suggestions?

Never really heard an exhaust whine. Most decent exhausts have a low deep sound to them, and get very aggressive with more gas applied. Cant think of a "whinny" exhaust.

Most Maxima mufflers aren't civic farts so you shouldn't have to worry about that; they give a very powerful(but not overpowering) satisfying growl at approaching WOT and purrs during normal driving. The growl will come when entering a freeway because of higher acceleration(i love onramps ). I would recommend the Stillen (forgot the model).

I think he's talking about an exotic-car like sound all the way up the tach. In which case, its going to be hard without to duplicate without cattman headers. With the stock exhaust and manifold, you'll get a deep sound and the exhaust sound is replaced by intake sound above 3,500rpm.

Yes, that kind of sound (though i know it would be difficult to reproduce on a "regular" car). But I would "settle" for the exhaust sound that comes out of most new infinitis like the G35 or the 350Z. These sound higher pitched to me than most exhausts. Is there an exhaust similar to this, or is it possible to even attach one of the infiniti/350z mufflers to our 4th gens?

BTW, why do the stock headers & manifold create a deep exhaust sound, whereas the cattman headers would not? Just curious.

Alot has to do with flow rate, design, and harmonics.

Any comments about the Borla? Which model muffler did you get?

okay, if you want your car to sound like a y-pipe with out one, take the muffler off, and just put a pipe and tip on (so that it isnt vibrating your entire car). or you can get a rice muffler, all it does is take some rasp out, and some of the vibration (has a tip behind fender) or you can buy a cherry bomb turbo II muffler ($18.99) and a tip (stainless for $10.95). it sounds good, no total car vibration, y-pipe rasp with out the y-pipe. also it keeps most of the sound out of your car when the windows/sunroof are closed. ive had all three of the above, and trust me, turbo II muffler, i could use a bracket to hold (with hand) it on, and there was absolutely no resistance. the biggest problem with getting different muffler in my mind, is the fact that at ~2500 rpm, the exhuast harmonizes and gets annoying. but with the turbo II muffler it is much much less quieter.

If you want the exhaust sound similar to a G35 or a 350Z, then buy one. Cause your not going to be replicating it anytime soon. I've heard of some attempts at it but they were marginal if at all. The secrect nissan is not telling us, but i think it's the cat back that is making that sound cause the actual sound sort of "appears" rather than aimed in one direction by the muffler.

The FM twins sound like they do because of the exhaust manifold design.

I just ordered the same muffler as 4x4Max. It is the Borla Pro XS Muffler (#40358). Its stainless steel and we both got it off of Wicked Nicky's exhaust on ebay for $69 plus $12 shipping (within the U.S.) Ended up costing $81 Canadian for me. I'm having it shipped to a store just across the MN border in Grand Portage. Its suppossed to be in today so I'm gonna go and pick it up but mine probably won't be installed for a week or two cause I ordered the tip and I have to wait for that to come in too. It should sound really nice and aggressive.

Edit: Sorry, it was $81 USD and $98 Canadian, apparently its not the right size to fit the stock exhaust system so hopefully the mechanics can figure something out.

How does the Borla Pro XS Muffler sound. I'm thinking of getting it for my 02 Maxima SE. I'm for more sound at idle, rather than just high revs.

Any ideas?

Thousands of exhaust threads on this site, and you pick the two year old one to bump.
