A/C Compressor or Bearing Going Out.

After replacing the least expensive parts in trying to eliminate the whining noise which is progressively getting louder and worse, I have come to the next part in question, the a/c compressor. I borrowed a friend's engine st-e-thoscope and found the noise coming from it. So now I'm on the hunt for a compressor. I have talked to other people and have suggested that the bearings could be replaced on this unit. Has anyone done this and if so, do you have a good source you can point me towards? I haven't called the stealership just yet as I am afraid that the cost would be astronomical.

Any input on the subject would be appreciated.

Yep, my dealer wants $400. I'm going to hunt at wrecking yards. If my ac compressor completely goes out, I'll just get a shorter belt and run w/o an ac til I find one.

Courtesy Nissan had them for $342 dollars when I needed mine (it was a little while back). I went to my local dealer and they matched that price .

I was able to find one for $308, genuine Nissan but still very pricey. I'm gonna have to check out the wrecking yard this week. Did you replace your own ac compressor? Did you have to discharge the system before disconnecting the compressor? Any tips you can provide would be very helpful.

I actually paid a mechanic who works from his modified truck. He had all the tools, air compressors, and the A/C recovery/refill systems in there. He came to my house discharged the system put the new compressor in and filled it back up. I do not remember the exact price for this, it was a while ago, but I think he charged me around $85 dollars labor and the price of the freon stuff.

I will probably give him a call this week, so he can check out my mom's car.

Thanks for the input guys. I am beginning to realize that this is not a DIY job unless I have the ac discharge/recharging system...this sux, this makes this whole thing more expensive to fix. I'm going to check 5 Nissan/Toyota/Honda wrecking yard nearby me first. And will see what happens from there.

Make sure the A/C Compressor year make is the same as your car...it has to be the same, trust me..
ex. if your car make is 4/95, the compressor needs to be out of a car make 4/95

I did mine from a junkyard 2 summers ago and it was about $100 from a junkyard...

I think that the cutoff date was from 6/96 (after this date they changed them to a different one). My car was built in 4/96 so I went with the same one that you have matty.
