I installed the Illuminas in the rear and was having trouble tightening down the center bolt. so i clamped a vise grip on the top part of the threads that is flattened, and then proceeded to wrench it tighter. However, how are you to get a precise torque measurement when the socket from the torque wrench has to go over the top, leaving you no where to hold the piston in place. it just spins. am i missing something here?
in case it matters, the car is sitting on the ground, all the weight on the stprings and i have the long travel rear mounts.

bumpety... any help here? i don't want to overtorque when i am just using the wrench and when i put on the torque and socket, i can't keep it from spinning.

 

bump, seriously, i know many of you have installed illuminas. can you just tell me hoe you torqued the rears to spec?

you dont torque them, the center bolt goes only so far, then it keeps spinning, the side bolts need to be torqued to 15-18 ft-lbs o rosmething.

 

wow, really? so i should just hand tighten them, then? i suppose that's why they supply two bolts. so i should loosen them since i tightened them down with a wrench, and then tighten them down by hand, right?

 

The center nut will bottom out on the threads and stop. Then put the locking nut on top (thats why it's provided) and give it a slight snug.

Thats how you "torque" down the center nut.

 

but you cant always get the nut to the bottom of the threads, which is what I think he meant in the original post. When I put in my gc's, I didnt get the nut all the way to thebottom of the threads, it still has maybe an 1/8 or even 1/4 of an inch to go. I'd have to compress the bushings to get it down all the way.
