it is i believe relatively easy. my friend who worked at a car shop said that it was worth it since if you go to your insurance company, gave them the keys and told them to start it. and if they can't, supposedly the insurance company will give you another discount since its even harder now to steal the car. thats what i've "heard" so you might want to ask your insurance company before doing this.

very popular here in Europe.
It cuts off your fuel (kind of like you taking the fuse out of your maxima that's for your fuel pump)

i used to work at an auto stereo shop and we'd install a relay that would cut-off the starter with a switch then mount the switch somewhere you wouldn't expect it to be (like the trunk or something) so if someone broke into your car they'd see hell if they tried to start it. Also we'd make the seatbelt act as the switch so if you try to start the car and the seatbelt wasn't fasined it wouldn't start at all.

We test drove an Impreza a few years back that you had to press one of the power rear view mirror buttons for it to turn on. A pretty good idea if you live somewhere where car theft is a concern, but up here its pretty rare so my factory immobilizer will do.

I have a $30 keypad....you need to enter the code to throw the relay to the starter. Pretty easy install, and ppl always ask what it is.

You should post up some details on rigging up a keypad!
Wonder if you could make it actually start the car?
But details would be WONDERFUL!

Is this the best way to go about it?
http://www.apogeekits.com/ignition_kill_switch.htm
(you can find it cheaper, but that has the installation PDF)
I think it would be better to rig it up to your fuel pump. Then there is no way it is starting. (They could technically push start a manual with the starter overridden.)
Are there any better options?
And is there any way to reprogram the series of numbers? (I don't think so, which is a major flaw in my book.)

And what do you think is better: a fuel pump cut off line wired to some button or switch in the car or that keypad for the ignition? Or is it better to install an aftermarket immobilizer?

Now to do some research to see if this think can be rigged to start a car.
Is there any type of switch or relay that is able to remain open for a set amount of time? If so could you run the keypad to that kind or relay and have it start the car for you?
Also, how hard would it be to bypass the part of the security system that sets off the alarm if it is started while not having the ignition in the run position? Is it as simple as cutting a wire and maybe installing a resistor?
Bear with me as I know nothing about electronics But it sure would be cool!

EDIT: wow just thought about how difficult it would be to only let the car think that the ignition is in the run position when you need it. (otherwise it would drain the batteries.)
That would be difficult to overcome since the relays (to my understanding) are only open for a short period of time (just enough to start the vehicle).

So I thought it would be cool to get a switch from Lexus. You know the neat black ones with the silver ring around them? They say engine start. Well I contacted my local lexus dealer to see how much the switch was and guess what...
FROM LEXUS DEALER:

Actually, that is just the switch, believe it or not,
Yes it does make you think twice,
What has happened? Is this a switch that has become defective?
Or is it not reacting properly,
I am sure that it being as new as it is, you should be covered through
warranty.

Subject: Re: Parts Order Lead

Wow,
Is that just for the switch? That is all I need. I just need the button
not
the entire assembly.
Thanks

Hi, and thanks for your inquiry,
The switch you are looking for is an available item as a special order,
it would take me about two days to get, and one day delivery anywhere
within Colorado,
The part # is 89611-30020, the price is $252.67

So I guess I will find a different switch.

Also, to hook up a new switch I will need a hot connection. Can anyone tell me what wire is always hot in the steering wheel area?
