i mean yea its easy, but its your brakes.. take it to another shop, and talk like you know your shiet, but just say you dont have the time, so they at least know not to rip you off.

things like brakes should be proffesionally done, not to be played with.. then again it feels good to work on your car and accomplish something

Thats crazy... I just had to replace my starter... they saw my worn pads and rotors in need of resurfacing and were like we can do that for 250. I said I can do it for 75 and have brand new rotors.. thanks but no thanks. He's like, you dont have the special tool for the rear pads... I said, oh the key to twist the caliper in? I bought that at pep boys for 11 bucks. Like I said, ill take care of it thanks.... Some people man....

Brakes are super easy. The only tough part is backing the rear calipers pistons out. Best if you get this cube-like tool that fits on your 3/8" drive ratchet so you can push in on the caliper piston and turn at the same time. Front caliper pistons back out w. normal pressure, it's just the back that has some wierd cam inside.

Here's a pic of the caliper piston tool:

Tranz, I've got front Brembo blanks if you are interested. Got 'em from Tirerack, didn't need em.

There's nothing unusual about the quote--if you look, the prices for the parts are about what we'd face on the web, but we may get 20% off. They don't give you anything off, well, a flat $20 front/rear. Then, they charge you $75 front, $99.95 rear for labor, flat fees. That's also pretty standard. There's no rip-off here. People on the forum should make a distinction between overcharging, and the fact that some things we can do ourselves. Just because we can do the brakes easily ourselves doesn't mean that anyone who charges to do brakes is ripping people off. Many of us here work in law, medicine, IT, etc. What our employers charge clients makes a $500 brake job look like chump change, but it doesn't mean we're rip-off artists. Food for thought.

VERY EASY!! I just finished my Q this past week on Wed. all four corners, pads and rotors. You get many benefits to doing this, a sense of accomplishment for one thing, secondly peace of mind that everything you do you do correctly. Last time I had someone else do my brakes, The car came back with a musshy pedal feel, they didnt even bleed the lines. With enough patience , the right tools and parts this is a very easy and worthwhile job to do by your self. TRUST ME!

Is it safe to replace just one front rotor? Once you come in for the repair, they may add another $70 for the other front rotor, and suddenly you are facing a $600 job. Throw in two rear calipers (which they find while your brakes are already taken apart), and it could get to 1K quick. Ouch!!!

This shop is making lot on the parts sale, and they don't have to resurface the rotors. They should give you a break.

I just did all of my brakes. I put the Brembo rotors and replaced all the calipers and pads, because all the rubber seals were bad on them. It was one of the easiest things to do and took around 3 hrs. Hovewer flushing the brakes took a while.... because of our inexperience we were doing it wrong for like an hour and wasted almost a gallon of brake fluid. However the job really is easy and the price that they r asking 4 it is way too big.

The funnest part of replacing your brake pads & rotors is bedding in the pads. Woohoo! I love the smell of hot brake pads in the morning!

Yes, but I would agree with chenzarino, brakes are easy. The only thing I would warn you about is retracting that rear caliber, you need a special tool, and at that it still sucks.
The front brakes on a max couldn't be easier, take a vice, open the bleeder and retract the caliper, put in new pads and/or a new rotor, and away you go.
Unless you rear brakes are leaking, bleed them and don't worry about them, they hardly do anything anyway, the rear pads on my car lasted for ~70K miles.
The fronts I change far more often.

I never bleed my brakes. I just take off the brake reservoir cap, and alternate pushing in the caliper piston and suctioning out fluid until I get the caliper piston in as far as needed. If I need a brake fluid change, I just take it to a shop and let them do it.

if you are un-easy about doing ur own brakes. maybe a fellow orger can help. maybe you can buy all the parts n he can change it for you for a small amount. watch carefully of what he's doing and the follow the same way next time. i know it might seem dangerous, and i almost didnt do it on my own. i usually pay $50 to som guy i know that works at a shop. he does it at his house. after watching people do brakes at pepboys because i worked there, made me realize there is nothing sepcial than changing oil.

If you can't do the work yourself, go buy the parts elsewhere. Kragen, (CSK) Autozone. And you'll save more than half of the parts cost.

Then I would never go there again.

Raybestos 96065RGS Disc Brake Rotor www. cskauto.com: $34.99 Quote:$59.95
Ceramic pads are the same prices, but do you really need them? Semi-metalic is 1/3 of the cost.

Raybestos H15791 Hardware Kit: Front; Disc csk:$6.99 quote $24.95

Look at that mark-up. THATS WHY THEY WON'T LET YOU BRING YOUR OWN PARTS! After that quote I would tell them

Take the car somewhere else and never come back!

And if they pull the "your car is not safe to drive" crap then get a tow home, it would be worth the cost.

Use a parking garage next time, if it's partly underground use than level, it won't be as cold. And if security comes and *****es at you, tell them you're fixing the car to get it out of there. Just bring something to lie down on.

Back to the topic:
How do you know the rotors are bad anyway? They can't be resurfaced?

Use another mechanic, find someone somebody you know is ok with.
