Replacing Auto Tranny this weekend??!?!?!1

Im gonna replace my auto trans this weekend and what i want to know is i should change the torque converter seal or not (the one on the trans looks ok) and if i should rent a trans jack or ghetto rig a regular jack to do the job.. and lastly if any one has any good tricks to do this efficiently... i have a hanes manual and a dealer service manual as well... some input to make this a smooth opperation would be helpful...

the hardest part with taking off the tranny will be clearing the torque converter, and actually loosening the torque converter bolts. Make sure you give yourself lots of room for the tranny to slide out. It's also VERY heavy, so don't put anyone directly under it, it can cause some major damage.

make a some kind of crane for the tranny..

this is what i did, i took too wood posts, put one on each side of the car, the put a long piece of wood over the engine bay ont the too pieces of wook

should look like this

l--------l over the car
l l

then attatch a chain to the top part and tie around the tranny. the only reason i said this is because its easier to lift the tranny out, especially since the auto trannies are heavy

I would remove the torque converter from the drive plate BEFORE you remove the tranny. That way the converter just stays on the input shaft of the transmission and the tranny doesnt have to come out very much. This is how I did it, and how the FSM says to do it.

You can access the bolts that secure the converter to the drive plate by removing that small black plate on the bottom of the engine. Then remove each bolt by rotating the drive plate with a screw driver on the teeth.

I am a newbie here. But, If it weren't the silly policy of the forum (you have to build up 15 replies before you can post), I would not dare to dig out the old thread.

Anyway, thanks for the reply. One more question, I noticed the one of the two 12mm bolts on the rear torque converter access plate (black half moon plate) was not tight at all. The dealer must have forgotten tighten it or over tighten it when they do the rear main seal replacement. In either case do you happen to know the right torque for the bolt. My Haynes manual doesn't give the exact torque number.

Thanks again.

I guess you're not aware of the newbie thread, which is there for the express purpose of allowing people such as yourself to ask your question without constantly digging up old threads.

The bolts that hold in rear cover plate? No need for a torque spec, just tighten them. If you feel the need, 56.4-66 in/lbs. It's covered in the FSM.

Hmmm. My bad. I saw the thread, but never got in deep enough to figure what it is for.

Anyway, thanks for the torque number and the helps. :-)
