I manually shift my car and I have gotten a better 1/4 mile from it (almost .1) I think it does help to go all the way to the red line then 500-600 rpms before

automatics are not designed to be power braked for more power they run best if left in drive and apply the gas hard as soon as you want to go

Exactly why do we get a rev limiter extension and a VI for better top end .... stock shifts @ 6k, why have the extra 700

It depends on the power band, but you seem to not know that ... think about its logic, and then post back, not just a "I've seen too many times ..... "

why? because the trans is designed to shift at certain points. thats why. when you maunally shift you are taking your auto beyond what it was designed to do, therefore causing damaged. most people will lose to a car left in auto not all BUT most people. it all comes down to driver skill.

Like others have said, R/T has nothing to do with the time on your time slip, but it is a determining factor on who will reach the finish line first.

example:

Car A reaction .500, 1/4mile 15.5
Car B reaction .300, 1/4mile 15.6

Guess which car is at the finish line first despite running the slower overall time? If you're into street races, reaction time to the green light is extremely important.

I thought this was what the original topic was about The kid is 16, unless he has a parent sign a consent form, he's forbidden to even drive up to the staging lights.

This is why you should install a tranny cooler and it is not as bad as a neutral drop. At the track, it's not like you need to torque brake for 2 minutes. If the opponent is on the line already, you need to pull up to the line and get your stuff together really quick anyway before the light starts dropping. Torque braking is the best way to launch the auto. I've gotten as low at 2.22 in the 60' stock with so so tires.

You're nuts. Never in a million years in a 4th Gen auto unless you have a huge shot of NAWZ.

Yes it is....except that those shift points are designed to reduce shift shock and be a blend of power and comfort.

Unless you've got a reprogrammed ECU, you are not going to get the most out of your tranny by leaving it in auto.

Right on!

Put 300k on my 3rd Gen auto and power braked it every chance I got. For the first 30ft, my 3rd Gen was the quickest car off the line I've ever driven...even at 300k, I left many a hot-shot driver with a perplexed look on their face.

There is an art to coordinating brake and gas just right.

Basically, it involves applying just enough pressure momentary on the brake pedal with your left foot while slowly increasing the RPM (with your right foot) to between 1,000 and 1,500 so as to keep your car from moving forward until you are ready to do so.

At which time your left foot moves off the brake and your right foot presses down on the gas, and if you did it just right, you've launched you car without any wheel spin.

Enjoy.

I tried this and it works great. The tires are screaming now! But this isn't something you can do all the time right? Does it slowly decrease the life of you transmission though?

Obviously, I would not recommend doing it every time you stop and go. On the other hand, you might actually INCREASE your tranny's longevity by moderately power braking if your tranny exhibits any delay or slippage from a dead stop.

When my tranny had over 200K, it started having a delay from a dead stop such that first gear did not engage until the RPMs went from an idle speed of 650RPM to 950RPM. By increasing the idle speed via powere braking, it helped to eliminate the harsh clutch engagement.

I should add that the delay also did not occur if I pulled away slowly from a dead stop...but unfortunately, I could never get used to driving like a Granny.

Who knows? Maybe I could have gotten 400k on my transmission instead of 300k?

My car seems pretty quick off the line. That's usually where I take all my races. Except for the time I raced an SRT4. He spanked me off the line, but then I caught up because he had like 5 people in the car. If floored my Auto always shifts at 6.5k. The only thing that manuals have over me are better launches, but I can't imagine launching at a higher rpm. My car peels out pretty easily being an auto.

No kidding, the bottom of 2nd gear on my 5speed VE was much quicker than the top of 1st gear in a auto VQ30 during a little meeting with a local member last year

Apples to oranges. I wonder how my automatic (and diff) would perform if it had the same number of gears and gear ratios as a 5-speed?

We'll never know.....

How are Maximas at top-end speeds? My friend (who has the Trans-Am) and I were talkin' about the STI that I raced, and he told me that the f***ed up his shifting and eventually gave up. I asked him if he would take the STI head to head. he said that he would go at like in the 50mph range because it a bad top-end speed. And it made me wonder how are Maximas top-end speed.

It was about Maxima 4 auto vs. 5 manual wasn't it?

It'll be apples to oranges no matter what gears you use, because they are completely different in there operation.

If you look at the specs an automatics first gear ratio it's shorter overall than the manuals second gear ratio. You'd think that the automatic would have the upper hand, but it didn't. This was from 30mph, where I'm at 3,000-3,100rpm in 2nd gear while the auto is at 4,800-5,000rpm.

I always thought it was good because on the highway I was cruising at like 100mph and I had the need for speed and I floored my Maxima still lurched and seemed to be accelerating and not showing any signs of slowing down.

I'd say just lay of the gas for now. If prices keep jumping, the gas will soon cost more than the mods.
