Steering Wheel Problem

As I was coming home from queens today, I was cruising at maybe 75-80 and the steering wheel started to shake like crazy... it would stop for a minute and then keep going... Anyone know the problem ?

Thanks

get your tires rotated and balanced, that did it for me. Otherwise, make sure your suspension is fine.

hymm...hope you were with someone since you're only 16. but anyhow, most likely that you're wheels n tires need to be balanced. but i usually don't since balancing wheels can cost up to $60 for me. a lil shaking here n there won't really do any damage for me...

nope I know that its not the tires or balancing since I just got new pirellis mounted and balanced at Mavis about 2 days ago. So its not that....

didit keep doing the rest of the way or it was fine once you slowed down?
Maybe check to see if you didn't throw a wheel weight, in which case a balance ought to be OK. Otherwise, probably should jack up the car and check your suspension points AND tire pressures.

just because it was balanced doesn't mean it won't shake. The guy who does the wheel balancing of me n my bro's wheel always says, again, if it shakes, bring it back and i'll balance them again. Bring it back to the place you got it mounted and tell them that it shakes and to rebalance the wheel again. n also check your tire pressure. But don't think that just because you had a guy balance the wheels its correct. I've gone back 10 minutes later to firestone becasue they messed up on my alignment.

That happens sometimes when your brake calipers are about to go. Happened on a few of my old cars (camry, 91max). When it's a balancing issue, it does not shake like "crazy", then stop. Have your brakes checked, I'm almost positive that's what it is.

I'm not understanding...Why would the calipers make the car shake unless he was ON the brakes?
He says it doesn't start to shake until he gets to about 60mph.

Sometimes the caliper gets stuck and creates too much friction on one wheel. You do not notice it til you travel at high way speeds for some odd reason. It has happened to me twice. I also thought it was a balancing issue. But the vibration is way too violent to even consider a miss balance.

There was a thread about a guy who tightened up his suspension and stuff. He said his car used to do that, and that when he got his tires rotated and balanced, they didn't help so he tightened everything up. I'm gonna go look for that.
