the most expensive wheel shimmy..

just to vent a bit..
had a shimmy in my steering wheel for about a year now.. after countless balancing and allignments. ive done... new rims, new tires, new struts, 2 sets hub-centric rings, wheel bearings, rotted engine crossmember welded. no luck
just ordered, 2 new control arms with the ball joints, inner tie rods, outter tie rods, and front stabalizer links.. now looking for front rotors to throw on while everythins is apart..
so one of two things is gonna happen.. either the shake in my wheel is gonna go away..OR.. im gonna put a bullet in my head..

I bet it's either the ball joint or tie-rod ends... I had a shimmy (60-70mph) that would never go away - new tires, new rims, balancing never helped... recently I just replaced both LCAs (including ball joints, and bushings), and inner/outer tie-rod ends... and the shimmy is gone... I owe Nick for his help and time!

Good luck! I know how annoying the shimmy can be and how frustrating it is when you are willing to spend the money to fix it, but just keep spinning wheels not being able to find the root cause.

tie-rods sounds like the culprit, should be smooth as butter after you get the new parts on.

Is it necessaryto change the entire lower control arm? Would just changing the tie rod ends be enough. Also, how do I know my tie rod ends are bad?

I have that shimmy 60-70 mph and it bugs me.

I have also heard that worn bushings on the control arms will cause shimmys.

its not necesarry if the ball joint isnt bad, but I'm sure he has many miles on his car and they have some wear on them. He want to tighten everything up so he's replacing most of the parts that would cause this shimmy at high speeds.

not really necessary, but you can get aftermarket control arms for around $60 each that come with all new bushings, and a new ball joint already pressed in.. its just worth it to spend the extra few $$$ and be able to swap out the entire part, rather than take the old control arms off, get the old bushings and ball joints pressed off, and then get new ones pressed in.. it would probably cost you what you'd be spending on the control arm to bring it somewhere to have the bushings replaced. besides, $60 for an aftermarket control arm vs. like $200 for the nissan one sounds pretty good to me..
