Battery and Alternator question..
Battery and Alternator question..
Hi..
Is this scenario possible? I don't know so.. I'm asking you guys..
If I have a bad battery.. and a new, good alternator.. is it possible that the alternator could be powering everything in my car (radio, lights etc..) If so, would that burn out my alternator?
Cause not sure if you remember but, i had an alternator issue where it drained my battery. The guy who tested it, AAA mobile services, said that my battery is drained and that the alternator was draining it and suggested that after I get the alternator installed, that I go and get a new battery. Since the alternator change, everything works fine but I'm not sure if its slowly harming something until I get a new battery..

a bad battery with low voltage, will cause the alternator's voltage regulator to increase voltage to the rotor, thus causing more work for the alternator.
in a normal car, the alternator when running, powers everything in the vehicals electrical system, the only thing the battery is there for is to allow to alternator to build up a magnetic field to produce AC current, and to start the vehical, and regulate voltage spikes from the alternator.
if the alternator is not producing enough amperage, the car will draw current from the battery.
but to answer your question, you should replace the battery if its bad. after you change an alternator, and you have had a bad battery, starting the vehical will cause alternator death.

Thanks Kill Crap..
Thats some good info. Thanks.. I'll head to sears.. What should I tell them regarding replacing my battery. I don't want to tell them that I got a new alternator but also.. the battery is only since last year..
