Cat. Gasket keeps breaking down. NEED HELP ASAP!

I have a budjet y-pipe, recently replaced OEM cat, and full greddy sp2 exhauset. I have replaced the gasket after the cat to the b-pipes a few times within the last year or so because it is breaking down and allowing leaks. Exhaust gets really loud and I hate it. What could be causing this to happen? I dont know if it is do to condensation or water coming after the cat, but any feed back is appreciated. I know this is an easy fix to change a gasket but its just annoying getting under the car every 6 months. Thanks for any help.

Could be due to warped flanges from overtightening the bolts.

Use some PERMATEX ULTRA COPPER High Temp RVT gasket maker instead.

Any suggestions to fix the possibly warped flanges, or best way to block the escaping air?

Yes. Just put a thick coat around the area where the two pipes connect. Reconnect the piping and let it cure for an hour.

I'm having a similar problem with my Y-pipe. It's a Cattman, on a 99 cali spec. The connection between the Y and the one pre cat that is not removed by the Y, developed a small leak and is making noise when the engine is under load. Will this rtv stuff seal this thing shut so it stops putt putt putting? Kind of hard to believe something like this would work better than an actual solid gasket. I'm guessing alot of people have used this stuff?

I used it this weekend and no more leak. Stuff dries quickly and seems to seal almost better than a gasket ever could because it can be put on thick, where as a gasket is all the same thickness. I would give it a shot. My exhaust (budget y, oem cat, greddy gr2) sounds beautifully quite now and I think this stuff is great. And at $5 a tube its worth a shot.

Nothing to figure out really, but if you have air tools, it might help out alot. I can't, for the life of me, break the bolts lose. I know exactly where the leak is, I just can't loosen the damn bolts to cure it.

Can i just loosen up the bolt from the front pre-cat and the y-pipe then squeeze the rtv in between or does the y-pipe have to be dropped. I know a dumb question I didn't install my exhaust.

I'll tell you in a few days when I try exactly that. Obviously the right way would be to uninstall the whole Y and start with new gaskets, but fok that nonsense. I'll do it the easy way if it works.

Ceasar-

300zx gaskets are the same size as ours?

sorry for bumping an old thread. I was thinking about applying the RTV to the flanges and still using the gasket. Would that work or should i just leave the gasket out?

You can do that, just put the rtv on both sides of the gasket. I have done that many of times. From turbos to mufflers. It seals great every time.
