Rebuilt tranny problems

I just got my car back after spending $1200 on rebuilding my tranny for the bearings and other things. Now it is harder to shift and my 2nd gear grinds sometimes. The guy said something about a 500 mile break in. What does that mean? Why is my 2nd gear grinding? It never even did that with the old tranny that had bad bearings. It is a 5 speed. Does anyone know what I can do or why it is doing this?

Get back to the shop and document the problems ASAP. and firmly demand the trans. be repaired!

Did you change the clutch while you were in there? How's your travel on your clutch slave cylinder?

Break-in time on a manual trans is B.S. That thing ought to shift right from the get-go. Absolutely no break-in required. Nissan builds cars with brand new tranmissions every day. Did you ever hear of a new car transmission not shifting properly for the first 500 miles?

Take it back and nicely demand a fix.

I am going to take it back on monday. I have a short throw shifter, do you think if it was to tight it could make it harder to get in gear or make it grind?

Sure it could. Did you put the new shifter on at the same time as the trans rebuild, or was it on there before and operating OK?

Sorry but you are wrong, all new clutches need a 500 mile break in. The 500 mile break in would have nothing to do with a bad feel, it should shift as smooth as butter. I recommend taking it back and have it re-examined. Make sure he put fluids and/or proper (GL4) fluids back in your trans.

If you would read my reply closely I never said anything about break-in time for the CLUTCH. He asked about the transmission itself. Of course the clutch assembly needs time to seat/break in, but this would absolutely NOT affect the operation of the transmission.

It is not a new clutch. The shifter was in before the tranny was taken out. What is the name of the part that goes from the bottom of the shifter into the tranny?

After having my trans re-built with all new bearings etc, I have had no problems. No grinding or anything. After having my STS put in I did feel it was harder to put it in gears and 3rd gear is sometimes somewhat of a mystery.

Well, I recently had my trans rebuilt for the 3rd time. This last time the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear change were really stiff for about 500 miles. Really stiff like as soon as I put it in 1st I went back in the shop and said something about it. Turns out my trans is perfect now unlike the other 2 previous times that felt smooth from the start but busted (1st rebuild in 400miles). So ..... Gear grinding sounds like a bad syncro. Had that happen on the second and dealt with it for 2 years.

I got it back and now shifting is easy but 2nd gear is still grinding. I guess I am going to bring it back again.

OK, so you took it back to the shop. What if anything did they claim to have done? You say that it is somewhat better, but maybe they need to LOOK at it again.

Well the shifting was very tight so they did something to the linkage and now it shifts better but 2nd gear still grinds. If I have been driving it for a while it doesn grind sometimes. What does that mean?
