HID glare

this is for those members who installed HID's without doing the whole projector retrofit thing.

stock housing + hid's= lots of glare!

has anyone with this setup come up with any ideas to reduce the glare and focus the light pattern without the retrofit projector route?

i noticed that there is a "shield" for h4 applications that go around the hid bulb itself and reduces glare.

I pulled the shielded set up out of a set of Volvo HID's and modified my housing to accept the shielded bulb holder. I have a descent cut off line, great light down on the road and the glare, if any, is very minimal. I've never been flashed, as was the case with the plug-n-play set ups for the 9004 bulbs. It took some work, but I have great headlights now.

When I had my HIDs in my 97-99 housing, I added a custom shield that I made from a 2" piece of copper pipe (cut it in half, sanded it, painted it with hi-temp black paint, and JB welded to the base of the bulb), the cut-off was OK, but I say it cut down the glare by about 80%, after installing the shield, before the shield I would constantly get flashed, even by a cop once, but after the install, i was NEVER flashed again. Here are some pics of the cut-off and the bulb. Sorry, don't have a pic of the cut-off on the wall.

Don't mind the spots on the headlight, my car was very dirty at the time..

Heres a pic of the bulb with the shield

The shield sits on the bottom, because light is reflected upwards, so when the bottom half of the light is blocked, it reduces glare.

could someone show a pic with one of those shields, shining the light at a wall to see the cutoff of it without projectors.

It's just a normal plug and play HID kit with a shield.

what happens wen u put the shield on the top? does it change the distance on how far the lights will be shinig on the streets or is it defeating the whole purpose?

Use this site as a guide to make your own HID bulb shield.

It defeats the whole purpose for the shield to be on top. The reason why the max headlight produces glare is because the intense light reflects off the bottom part of the light producing a high beam like glare, even with the lights aimed all the way down there is still glare, just not as bad. Retrofitting is not that hard plus you get more light out of the set up when it is done properly. With just plug and play you get glare and a bunch of foreground light but not much travelling light/far beam pattern.

yea i'm pretty interested in the beam pattern and the cut offs on this as well. I'm sure its not as great as a retro but just wonder how it compares.

Thank God they make something like this! I rarely get flashed unless I'm on an incline and that's with my headlights aimed all the way down. I try not to get directly behind cops at night. My heart pounds when I'm sitting across from them at a stop light at night. Does anyone have these and would they make a good buy? I would like to make one, but since I'm staying at a family friend's house with my parents. They'd go off if they caught me "working" on my car. I always wanted to do the retro thing but never really had the time.

I was going to say AEing the headlights reduces glare. Dunno how much, but with my headlights aimed down only somewhat, and the AE mod, I was never flashed, and got great light output.

Painting the bottom part of the headlight will reduce glare, I don't know how the lights will look in the daytime though since it's no longer chrome. You may have to do a photoshop to see, but technically it will work.

I bought the casper electronics HID sheild and got it yesterday. It didn't fit the housing (couldn't get it inside), and it didn't fit around the socket containing the HID bulb Will be returning it.

Theres always the Cefiro headlights which use H4 bulbs and fit out Maxima's with some mods to the body, direct fit for I30s.
