ECU - Can you tell what year/trim by looking at it?

I have an ECU here and Im pretty shure its from a 97 5speed but I was just wondering if there was a way to find out by looking at the numbers on the ecu? There is a barcode on it and also an orage sticker with some numbers.

The orange sticker is the best way. What I would do is look on car-parts.com and many of the ECU's have the #'s listed. If several 97 5spd ECU's have the same number as yours then you know it is probably a 97.

On the subject of ECUs, does anyone know if you can replace your ECU with a later model ECU? Also, are there any advantages, performance or otherwise, to doing so?

I'm thinking my 95SE may need a new ECU (persistent starting problems) and looking at car-parts.com I noticed there are several versions that were made for the 95.

No. None. You'll only gain power upgrading the ECU to a TS or JWT program.

Will an JWT or TS ECU alone give any gains?

Lots of gains. One advantage of JWT over TS is the raised rev limit which is good for MEVI guys but they both are great
