Axle Boot Failure

I have a general question. I recently placed some 16" rims and new tires on my car. I had 15" before. When I washed my car this past Tuesday there was no sign of the rubber boot chaffing or signs of a crack to warn me that the rubber boot is going to fail on the axle. Today I changed my front brakes and the damn greese is all over the inside of the rim and its both the passanger and driver's side. My question is can a change of the axle angle with the increase of diameter cause the boot to fail. Usually I would notice a torn boot one at a time, but for both to fail together is strange and with no warning.
