I wonder how the guage in the tank could suddenly stop fuctioning? but its possible, that part isnt really hard to replace just have to be cautious when doing so.
It maybe the guage, the floater is working and turning on the light but the guage isnt moving, that seems like more of a possibility.

Actually the floater itself might be working, but the mechanism is typically that as the floater moves up and down it physically moves an electrical contact (a rheostat most likely). These contacts tend to wear out over time.
It is likely a worn sender or a guage. The float itself is likely ok, but it is possible that the float is stuck (not sure how that would happen though).

i had that same problem. the gague worked fine but the gas light was on constantly. i never did find the cause. it had been on for a few months with no problem so just last night i took out the bulb. not the best fix, but i dont really need a light to tell me when to fill up anyway
