Trunk Gasket Leaking

Has anyone ever had their trunk weather stripping deform and just not fit anymore? Mine is only from 99 but it seems to have shrunk and just will not fit around the trunk lip causing it to leak, no other solution then to get a new one for $100?

Water usually enters the trunk via the tail light seals not the trunk seal. The trunk has a channel around it which guides the water out, right over your tail lights.

Try it for yourself with the trunk open, run water down the back window and watch where it goes.

Nah the trunk gasket is hanging off the lower right side and will not go back on, almost as if it is not wide enough,it will go on one side but when you stretch to put it back on the other it pops off the opposing side, just will not fit!!

i've never heard of gaskets shrinking before. did you have some some of chemicals in the trunk that gave off fumes? doesn't really matter, you have to fix the problem.

other than nissan, i don't know where else to get a gasket, never had to look. maybe you could find a junkyard car or or talk to someone parting out a max.

My 99 has exactly the same problem...I forgot to ask the stealer...oops,I mean dealer to check if they could reinstall it when I was in the other day.I think this weekend I'll make a determined effort to stretch it and see if I can't get it to fit.

i have an idea maybe.....just an idea dont kill me for it...

1. ok this involves 3 people
2.have one person hold the gasket on each side and hold it
3. have the 3rd person heating up the gasket with a heat gun or hairdryer
4. then once its all hot and melty?...you can stretch it and pull a few more inches out of it???

maybe you could try this...whaddya think???

Finally got around to doing this...it turns out to not be such a problem.Using the correct adhesive(essentially contact cement) just do one half, let it set, then the other half is easy since the weatherstripping is anchored.
