what is the exact purpose of the rear sway bar and how big of an effect does it have on the 4th genrations since they dont have an independent suspension?

And it has a major effect. Car feels much more planted and can take long sweeping turns without feeling like flying out the window.

It changes the roll stiffness, and therefore, the weight transfer when cornering. The stiffness and weight transfer go up. When added to the rear, the rear will lose traction sooner than it otherwise would. For the Maxima, which is very nose heavy and understeers, will make the handling more balanced. Just watch it in the rain and other slippery conditions.

It's easy. Especially the Addco bar for the 3-gen maxima. Just a few simple hand tools and some ramps is all that's needed. But be sure to use some waterproof grease on the two bushings that hold the bar up to the body. They will squeak like hell if you don't.

And for 3rd gens, be sure to have that Craftsman TIG welder handy when you bust the sway bar mounts doing hairpin turns...(NOTE: this is NOT an issue for 4th gen Maximas)
