Cruise Control not Working!

I have a 98 5-speed GXE which is having problems with the cruise control. I switch the cruise on and the light next to it comes on fine. But when I press the button to set the cruise control, the green cruise control light in the bottom left of the gages starts flashing. Does anyone know what could be causing it to flash and not engage?

Thanks.

I've had this problem for about a year now, only sometimes my cruise won't work at all (nothing happens when i hit set), sometimes it does work with no problems, and sometimes it works for a while, then as you described, the green cruise light flashes and the cruise stops working.

I have a check engine light for my vehicle speed sensor (0104 i think), which i've replaced but that didn't fix it. I think it's something wrong with my gauge cluster that I took out of a 96 SE to replace my black GXE cluster.

if you're lucky, it might just be your vehicle speed sensor.

Will, I do appreciate the response, although I am aware there is something wrong with the system since it doesn't work, that's why I posted. Thanks though.

I don't have the speed sensor code. The first time I noticed the malfunction was after having my car alarm installed. The work was fairly shoddy, so I think they messed it up, but I was hoping there was a simple solution. Any other ideas?

i'd go back to the shop who did your alarm and tell them they messed something up, and have them fix it

I have about 144k on mine, and it works but I have to press the set button (the one on the bottom) a few times (anywhere from 1 to 10 times). The remaining two buttons work fine.

Any ideas what I should check for this?

PS. Sorry to hijack the thread but if it's on the same subject why create one?

according to my fsm for my 97, the blinking light when you try to engage the cruse control could be either the vehicle speed sensor or the ASCD pump circuit. (ASCD = Automatic Speed Control Device)

the speed sensor is in the transmission (i think) and the pump circuit consists of 2 pieces under the hood screwed to the the firewall.

i can email you an Adobe PDF file of the 24 pages if you want. it has parts locations, diagrams and diagnostics.

e-mail me at dennismik@yahoo.com with your e-mail address

I'll take a look at that stuff today. Unfortunately I took it back to the shop, told them the cruise worked on the way to their shop, but not on the way back, and they baseically said they had nothing to do with it, end of story. They're kinda shady and I can't force them to fix it. Plus they might make things worse, they've had to replace the alarm once already after 9 months
