Huge Problem!!!

Well i just replaced my 5spd. tranny w/ a new one from the dealership. Well I got my car back 10/18/05. I have a huge problem. Before my car use to start a little rough, my battery sucked. I bought a new one cause the old died out from the car not being turned on for about 2 weeks. I put the new battery in. Now when i go to start the car I have to keep the key to start for about 15 secs. If this doesnt work i do it again and then the car cranks.

Does anyone know what is causing this? I thought maybe a bad fuel filter or spark plugs . But i channged those yesterday, and it didnt work. The starter sounds fine. Tomorrow I will be doing the fuel pump just cause i think that might be it. Im afraid if i dont fix this soon my starter is just going to fry... Help Please!!!

You mean it does *nothing* for 15 secs before it cranks?

I had similar problems for the last month or so.. cleaned up my terminals and connections, still the same, and then it started cranking over slowly sometimes sounding like the battery was dying (but it wasn't the battery) and eventually my starter died about a week ago.

I had to get a push start (5 speed) to get home and replace the starter in the morning.

But if the starter is working fine once it turns over, then its probably a connection or maybe even the solenoid?

Yeah thats my problem it turns turns turns, then after about 15 secs itll crank over and start. Then the car drives as if it had no problems...

Wait, so it is cranking the engine for a long time (as fast as its supposed to?) and then after ~ 10-15 cranks it starts?

What was happening to me was that *NOTHING* was happening for a long period of time, turn the key and all you got was the accessory power (lights, radio etc) and the starter just laughed at you, until it came to life and started my car; which quickly ended and resulted in a new one...

mine was doing that ^ and it drew my battery dead a couple of times. It wouldn't hurt to just pull your starter off and take it in to Auto Zone and have them test it to see if its still functioning properly. if nothing else you'll eliminate one area that the problem might be comming from, and you'll probably find its your starter going bad and save yourself draining a battery or two over time.
