alright, it's my understanding that the 5th gen max's have a subwoofer with their bose system. and 4th gen's don't. so, is there a way i can buy a bose sub for a 4th gen? or any sub? or is it a completely different head unit?

why would you want to add the bose sub? it would cost sooo much money and really doesnt perform very well. You could spend as much or less, buy a sub or two and add an amp and you would be alot better off IMO

I've got a 4th Gen too and was looking for a sub. Infinity makes one that is supposedly compatible with factory systems. Apparently it plugs right into the current system. Im still waiting to hear if it is any good or not.
www.infinitysystems.com Its called the Basslink.

Some time ago I attempted to just splice in a new amp and subwoofer (without reading any of the wiring diagrams or even stopping to think). This resulted in blowing the amp on the right rear speaker and a lot of blue smoke.

Anyone know where to get a new one cheap? I sure don't

well i havent actually heard the stereo in the 4th gen maxima.. but in my mothers 2000 it sounds pretty decent with the sub.

are you saying the 4th gen doesnt even need a sub?

and i found this website, i dont really understand how to do it since i'm not good with stereo's or wiring.

It's really easy to add any sub/amp combo if you have any wiring experience at all. Go check out the MaxFaq and read the directions on adding a sub. I'm running a JL 12" with a Sony XM-752 amp.

Sub

The bose system is good up until the sub. It's very easy to add an aftermarket sub(s) to the bose. Before I gutted out my entire bose settup I had it runnig 3 JL 12w6's at 300 watts each. All you need is a line converter ($20). Grab the signal at your rear left speaker, after the bose amp. Then you just plug in whatever amp you want and your all set. I work for a car audio shop I can get you any info you need. Mine worked fine for over a year.

Re: buying the sub

The 4th Gen Bose system produces bass, not bad really. It's just that since it depends on 6.5" speakers to produce the large bas signals, when you pump it real loud, the bose speakers reach their limit real fast.
So, for normal listening, the bass is fine. At 110 SPLs, the bass is crying for help. No substitute for cubic inches

for Bose repairs

You could try this link
http://carstereohelp.com/nissan.htm

Or this one
http://www.boserepair.com/html/nissan.htm

And the original
http://www.davescoolstuff.com/

Personally, I am convinced that it is worth the cost to repair a broken Bose stereo. I think that the discerning ear would easily come to the same conclusion. Those who base stereo quality on the SPL of the thump need not apply though. The Bose system in the Maxima is one of the best, period. Not listening to rap helps, too.

boseing around

Yeah, that makes sense. Like the 4th gen Bose setup, the rear speakers use the trunk to produce alot of mid-bass, and leave the deeper bass to the fronts. I guess the 5th gen woofer can produce more mid-bass than the 2 6.5s in the 4th gen.

Adding subs

DEFINITELY get another amp. The Bose amps are really only meant to drive the speaker they are connected to. Your are really asking for trouble if you try use the bose amps to drive your subs, too.

Re: so what your saying is...

A bose system (sub amp included)runs around 12-13 ohms if you try to run a 2 or 4 ohm sub off of it you cook the amp maybe even the head real quick.

scrap the Bose

Based on the cost involved, you're probably better off getting a replacement head unit. The Bose units are antiquated. I just got my JVC KD-SH99 and it's got all the direct connectors to go with the Bose DIN adapter, plus it has extra RCA plugs to go to a separate AMP supporting subwoofer and other speakers. All for only $290. With the new advanced in electronics over the last 3-6 years, you'll be better off than struggling with integrating components with your existing bOsE system.

$290, where??? crutchfield is $399!! with this receiver you can run the bose speakers including their amps?? meaning it can run at the 1 ohm?? with this i mean that you dont use the head unit for any power just like the bose doesnt?? this seems kinda like a stretch, and the discription said nothing about it online... im interested!! please let me know!!

Mine does. Make sure when making your CDR to fully close the session. Also, if you record multi-sessions, my bose only recognizes the 1st session that was recored. So when I burn CDs for my car, I write the whole CD in one session. ALso, burn WAV files, not MP3s. That only gives you 74 minutes, but it works. I personally prefer wav anyway, the lossy compression in MP3s takes away something.

Yep, Crutchfield has it for $399 and quite a few other on-line shopping sites have similar prices. Many of them say "on backorder". I bought mine from www.xtremeshopper.com. It was a little slow, about 2 weeks from order date, but I couldn't beat the price. When I got it it was $289, but because the demand increased it is now $299. Still, a very good price for this exceptional unit.
