95 Max SE - cruising 40mph, floor it, revs to 6500rpm, but car takes a sec to go...

Hi. After I took out my intake and put it back in, I noticed that my 95 Max SE no longer accelerates like it did before. It seems fine from 0mph, actually, it feels a little worse. However, the main issue is that now, when I am crusing around 40mph, and floor it, the engine fairly quickly revs to about 6500rpm, and then the car takes second to go. Before, the car would just jump forward and go immediately. What happened? Is it related to the intake? I am thinking it must be since it only happened after I took the intake out and put it back in. However, it sounds more like a tranny slip. I don't know, hopefully it will go away when I put my CAI in on Friday. I'll let you know. Any suggestions as to what it could be? Thanks in advance.

Tranny slipping.

Just think for a second, how would an intake cause these symptoms?...

Sounds normal to me...

Cruising at 40MPH means your torque converter might be locked and the tranny is up in 4th gear. The car can go 40MPH in 1st gear so whats happening is that when you floor it under those conditions the TC has to unlock and the tranny must downshift from 4th to 1st. Hello, that takes about a second or so to happed. Also the engine must rev all the way up from around 1200 to almost 6000 before you feel any power from being down in 1st gear. Then a split second later..... an up shift to 2nd and your pulling hard again.

Thats how your automatic transmission works. I don't think there is anything wrong with your car.

thanks!!! that helps .. but when the headlights are on at night and you give the right turn signal the side light (next to the headlight also does not illuminate ... normally the sides become brighter when you indicate .. i dont know what the problem would be with that ...

yes he is very correct. I've done this just today. going from 35-40mph to right around 80-90mph. It does take a bit for the car to downshift. Once it shifts into 2nd your car gets a going :P

are u sure the intake is on good ? cuz if all the stock tubing is not on, it might affect power. If you can or want to, just take out the snorkel and drive around. There will be the cold air intake sound. but pay attention to power when u floor it at different speeds. Put the snorkel back on and do it again. I think you will notice a difference. I know I did. and yes, autos do lag

Tom - the reason I suggested his tranny was slipping is he says his engine speed shot to 6500 RPM, but he didn't feel any "go". I just tried this on the way home and you definitely don't get to 6500 RPM before you feel the power... you just can't get the engine speed that high that quickly... even at WOT... but thats just my two cents.

My initial diagnosis was to suggest a dying transmission. But, I remember when I was an automatic, 40mph was a horrible place to start a race because the TCU would take forever and a day to downshift. Because of this, I got waxed by an old MR2. Does this happen while crusing at any other speed (revs climb quickly but the car doesn't go anywhere)?

And I thought that was a good reason that there is something wrong with my Auto tranny and I need a 5spd swap??????

Just having an auto tranny is reason enough for a 5-spd swap

no, it only occurs at around 40-50mph.

I agree, he shouldn't see 6500 RPM's, but I also question wheather or not he really is seeing 6500 RPMs???? The tach does fly up to around 6000 but really shouldn't be at 6500, what's the stock rev limit on our cars anyhow?

6600 is the fuel cut IIRC. However, the TCU will shift around 6K

It's definitely 6000-6500rpm.

At 40mph it shouldn't go up to 6500 rpm when you kick down the pedal because 40mph is too much for the tranny to try to go into 1st...something doesn't sound right

Yeah, I tried it some more today, and it's closer to 6000rpm, but it has gone above that before. It actually also does it at around 80mph as well as at 40mph.

a few questions regarding this phenomena... 1. would turning the o/d off help to eliminate that 1 second of nothing happening? 2. torque converter upgrade??? (i really don't know what this is)
and u can test the rev limit by making the dumbass mistake me and my friends made while installing my CAI.
-install all parts and tube clamps
-don't check clearance on moving parts
-start the car and floor the gas pedal
-find out that the throttle cable is stuck on a clamp
-hear that RUUURUUURUUURUUURUUU noise of ur engine hitting the rev limit
-take the keys outta the ignition REAL quick
-Thank God that ur car was in park and you didn't just drive thru the wall of ur garage and into your house like the Kool-Aid guy. I don't think my parents would find it amusing if i did that and got outta my car and said "Ooooh Yeah!" lol
