Engine Temperature - Changing Thermostat Question

I'm having a problem with the engine temperature gauge. At times it seems to flutuate a lot going from 10% warm to just under 50%. After driving for a while, the car stays around 20% or less on the gauge. Do you guys have some advice on what this could be?

If the temperature gauge drops while driving on the highway for example, you likely have a bad thermostat - it is stuck open, so you are overcooling the enging.

If the temperature gauge sits in the middle once the car is warmed up and while idling, but then starts dropping as you start driving, its definitely a bad thermostat.

15 bucks and and hour (maximum) to change it out. You can do it yourself.

Thanks for the info. I'll try changing the thermostat. I don't suppose there is a how-to anywhere on how to do this.

i have a new thermostat and my gauge does that...not sure what the problem is, some say it's a sensor next to the ects, which i replaced a few years ago...someone also suggested it could be a voltage issue, which i'd have no idea how to fix. another suggestion was the gauge itself is bad because it happens to 95's seemingly often. i'd like to get rid of the problem but am not exactly sure what it is at this point in time.

Thermostat change is easy. Just a few bolts and it pops right out. Most people tell you to remove the belt tensioner, but I just loosened it up to where I had room to work. Easy job.

The Haynes manual says that you have to drain the coolant to change the thermostat. Is it possible to do the thermostat change with draining the coolant?

Yes. I didnt drain anything. It gets a tad messy, but if you are careful its not too bad.

It takes 5 mins to drain the radiator - thats all you need to drain... thats what I did.

If you haven't changed coolant for a while, it's not a bad idea anyway. I drained mine. Don't forget to get the air out when you refill!!

You're an idiot.

First, this is just ****ing annoying, second, expect to be banned soon, like Dubbya said, no one, mods especially, like this type of posting.. Read the stickies, and none of this bull**** posting just to get to 15.

You realize every time you try to evade a ban, you'll be banned for longer?

I forsee a you and maxima.org just not getting along that well. There is the right way to go about becoming a respected and welcome member... including getting the necessary posts. You've chosen the wrong way.
