suggestions for new muffler or exhaust system...

Hi. I looked at my muffler today; it has rusted so badly that there is a hole in it! HAHA! So yeah, I need to get a new muffler. Do you think I should get a whole new catback exhaust system like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Monza...QQcmdZViewItem

Wouldn't that cost about the same as a muffler alone? (I don't really know much much mufflers cost, but my friend told me they cost around $300-400, for his car at least) I am planning on getting a Y-Pipe soon, so I guess the catback exhaust system would have to work with it. Any suggestions on a new catback exhaust system that is fairly cheap other than the one I just mentioned?

Or should I just get a muffler that works with the stock exhaust that would improve performance?

My budget is tight though so please give me some suggestions of what I can get that would improve my performance the most (probably under around $350, but if there is anything a little north of there that is much better, please tell me). Thanks.

Just buy a 5th Gen muffler and save your money for a Budget stainless steel y-pipe.

It's quiet, cheap, and is easier to find than a 4g and is said to flow sligtly better.

Not sure if there is any truth in this, but I've read on the .org that the 5th Gen muffler looks better on a 4th Gen Maxima than the OEM muffler, but that may be purely subjective.

I don't want quiet. I want something like a MagnaFlow, with a loud, deep, roaring noise, but I can't seem to find a MagnaFlow muffler for the 95 Max SE.

Also, I am getting the y-pipe next year so I don't really want that right now. Right now, I just want the best exhaust system that $350-400 can get. So following that clarification, what are your suggestions?

P.S.

What is wrong with a huge tip? I personally think a bigger tip looks better. Aren't bigger tips better for performance too? I want this: http://www.autoanything.com/products...be_exhaust_tip but I don't think I'll get it until I finish all my other tasks such as y-pipe and subwoofers.

What year is your Maxima and what mileage does the clock show? IIRC, your tires are shot and you have a number of other problems with your car.

Unless, money is no object, I suggest you prioritize your maintenance requirements for your car and then see where the catback system fits in.

It is a Maxima 95 SE, and it has I think around 107,000 miles. Yeah, I guess you are correct about the maintenance requirements, but if a stock muffler will cost me $400, then why not get an entire catback exhaust system for $220? That takes care of a nice muffler, as well as a few other great performance parts! This is mainly why I was asking. I don't want to take it to Nissan and have them end up giving me something I plan to replace.

Monza is crappy quality. Though it sounds pretty good. You get what you pay for, so if you really want a cheap way out but also desire the gains of a catback, but a muffler (GReddy SP2 knockoff on ebay would be an example) and a warpspeed b-pipe. Keep the stock resonator, and get a y-pipe. Total cost... a lot cheaper than buying a GReddy SP2 catback, though I would reccomend it. And SiliconStyleS9, try not to sound so next time.

Stillen has a nice muffler for around $300, you should go to Stillen.com to check it out. And people have told me it is loud, so you probably would like it.

If you want loud get a ricer canister muffler (think Supra, RX7, WRX size..) off ebay or wherever is cheapest and just have an exhaust shop put a straight pipe where your resonator is. You obviously are going for "it's loud so it must be fast" so go all out. AND with this setup you will have money left over to be able to get enough decals for both sides of your car! happy ing!

But gains are gains... so according to what you said, no gains are found in... spending $600 to upgrade the ecu for example?
