i got replacement headrests for a 96 maxima. the problem is, the driver side's adjustible hole seems defective. the passenger seat holes are fine, the metal bars go in all the way down.

with the driver's side, the metal will stay up about 1.5 inches...so that the 2 bars are showing. i've tried holding the button and pressing it down, but it was futile.

my friend and i examined the hole for about 15 minutes, testing how deep a straw could go into it and marking the length. then we tried a long thin screwdriver, and we found out that there is a slight obstruction in the hole. we couldn't find that obstruction in the passenger seat holes. it was only the driver's side adjustable hole that was the problem.

can anyone help me out? i really want to put the headrests to the lowest position since i'm a small person.

(i ordered replacements because the metal bars ripped right through the foam in the upwards direction, so it ripped through, probably because the previous owner was too rough with it.)

i need major help..thanks

i looked inside the holes wish a flashlight...

well, i peeked inside with flashlight, and i compared the passenger hole with the driver hole. the passenger hole clearly has no metal obstructions blocking the straight path. When i looked inside the driver's side hole, there seemed to be a little metal that seemed like it was bent out of place...i can't describe it...but i know it partially (about 10%) blocks the hole going down.

can anyone please help?

possible suggestions

Try swapping the headrests (they should be the same so the problem should re-occur). If you have cloth seats (I'm not sure if this applies to all years or just the later years), the backboard is attached with six clips. Remove the bottom two and the middle two (they are like the door panel clips) and the backboard will drop down. This will allow access to the area where the obstruction is occuring.

Did you try sticking a thin screwdriver down there and bending the piece back so the headrest could slide by?

maybe the guy who was rough on the headrests broke the driverside one and a piece got stuck in there. is the obstruction in both holes or just one? if worst comes to worst... measure how much space is left between the headrest and the seat.... then cut the amount off the bottom... you'll get rid of the problem... may not be the right way but if you really really want to get that headrest down... go for it

Yes, I did try to bend it back. When I looked inside with the flashlight, I could see the marks I made with the screwdriver.

I'm thinking of taking off the backboard cover from the rear end of the seat.

I still need some help on how to remove a panel (such as the backboard of the front seats, or the door panel) which is attached by clips of the same sort. I'm really afraid I might break it and I won't be able to put it back together.
